Have an old AT&T with Win 95 2.0. Will not load program from boot disk or cd.
Gets POST and then says loading Win 95 and freezes. It was working before I
tried to upgrade HD from 1 gig to 4. Put it back in original condition and
now I'm stuck. Appreciate any help.

Check that the hard disk drive is correctly recognised in BIOS.
What happens when you try to boot from floppy?

The hard disk in bios is on auto.
That is what happens when I try to boot from floppy. It goes thru mem check
and POST. Then says Loading Windows 95 and stays right there for an hour. I
can get to bios and safe start menu but never to a Windows screen. Have
original program disc and recovery disc and product backup disc along with
floppy boot disk and sys diagnostics floppy. Nothing will get any further.
Get 3 missing file notes, C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS, C:\WINDOWS\DBLBUFF.SYS and
C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS. Any help here?
I got into PC's late and my first one was WinME. I'm now using WinXP Pro on
my PC so I never got any depth in MS-DOS.
Been back into my A+ Text and a manual on DOS 6.0 and have tried what I
could read and also some hints from these columns. I'm probably missing
something very basic but now I can't see the forrest for the trees!

Go into the BIOS setup and make sure the boot sequence is set to "A:, C". Be sure
to save and changes when exiting. Then try the boot disk.

Just because BIOS disk detection is set to Auto does not guarantee that the
disk is being detected properly. The BIOS should show the disk setting that
it has automatically detected, and you should confirm that this is correct
for the installed hard disk.
That doesn't sound to me like it's loading from floppy at all. Is the floppy
drive set as the first boot device in BIOS settings? Have you checked with
another computer that the boot floppy you are using works properly?

Press F8 just before "Starting Windows 95..." appears. Choose "MS-DOS
Command Prompt only".
Does the command prompt (C:\) appear?
If yes, type:
c:
cd\
dir /p
See if you can find a directory named "Windows".
If you find it type:
cd windows
dir *.sys
Are those missing files there? HIMEM.SYS is the most important
If you find them type:
cd\
ren config.sys config.bak
ren autoexec.bat autoexec.bak
Restart the system and tell me what happens.
If you don't find them try to get himem.sys from another computer
running windows 95 or 98.
If you don't find a directory named Windows tell me the name of some of the
files you see there. Maybe i can find out where is your windows... :-)

Boot disks are not designed to start Windows. If you are trying to reinstall Windows,
start the computer with the boot disk, insert your Windows 95 CD and type "R:\setup".
If you are trying to extract fresh copies of the missing files, see

Try using a Windows 98 boot disk. Also note that the downloads at
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm are programs that you
download and double-click on a working Windows computer.
They will not work if you simply copy them to a floppy. If this doesn't
help, please repost with more information, including the manufacturer
and model of the CD drive.

Using Win 98 bootdisk-message is "remove all disks and media.Press any key to
start. Nothing happens.
With Sony CD-ROM Mod CDU76E (OEM) run lite would come on and stay on.
Screen reads "starting Win 95" then sits there running but nothing happens.
With Lite-On CD-ROM Mod LTN-301 run lite would come on 3x and then sit
there,run lite out. It would not finish the loading either.
I'm in over my head now and have too many avenues going through my mind. I'm
beyond "KISS".

That means you are using your floppy to start your computer.
Continue with the commands. See if your windows is there. If it's not,
you'll have to reinstall it.

I suggest you test the boot disks on a working computer. Also, please confirm
that you are downloading and double-clicking the boot disk files and not simply

The disk created with the utility from bootdisk.com is working properly.
Once you get the A:\> prompt you need to use DOS commands to diagnose the
problem. You can use Scandisk to check the file system on the hard drive,
or you can run hardware diagnostics (always a good first step) or you can
simply investigate the folders and files on the hard drive to confirm that
everything is there.

Thank you, Jeff. This is good news.
One last question and I'll be on my way.....
Having started with ME and now into XP, where can I get info on DOS
commands. I do have a MS-DOS 6.0 manual but I can't seem to get basic
commands from that or my A+ textbook.
Thanx again, everyone.

Thank you for the ref sites. I'm studying them but I think what I really need
is a tutorial on writing the commands.

Bios is set for A:\,C:
Have three missing files:
C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS>C:\WINDOWS\DBLBUFF.SYS>C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS>
Can't load these from disc either.

Go into the BIOS setup and make sure the boot sequence is set to "A:, C".
Be sure
to save and changes when exiting. Then try the boot disk.

As a final note to this thread you must also go into bios and use password
function. Everyday I get older and sometimes wiser.

What is the result from running Scandisk and the hardware diagnostics?

Are the files really missing? Have you checked?
If you search for those files,
you may discover that they are in C:\WINDOWS,
right where they should be.
Your problem then isn't that the files are missing.
Rather, it is that, as far as your system is concerned,
C:\WINDOWS cannot be found.
This is caused by a virus which modifies C:\MSDOS.SYS
The MSDOS.SYS file should look something like this
[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C
[Options]
AutoScan=1
BootSafe=0
BootGUI=1
BootMenu=0
BootMulti=1
DoubleBuffer=0
DBLSpace=0
DRVSpace=0
Logo=0
WinVer=4.10.2222
;
;The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs.
;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes).
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxa
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxb
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxc
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxd
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxe
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxf
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxg
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxh
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxi
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxj
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxk
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxl
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxm
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxn
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxo
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxp
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxq
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxr
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxs
I believe that you will have something else in one or more of those
statements.
Specifically, WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS may say WinBootDir=0
If it does, then that is the cause of your problem,
and you will need to edit the MSDOS.SYS file
to change the statement back to what it should be.
