Was able to copy disc onto C: as Win98Flat (temp). When I go to safe mode,
command prompt only it says himem.sys not in directory, which is true.
When I tried to copy himem.sys from boot disk it says cannot copy already
there.
How do I get himem.sys back into directory???

Start the computer, select "Command Prompt", then type

c:\win98f~1\setup

Well, I'm trying.
Started computer-f8 to command prompt-c:\win98f~1setup. Response is "bad
command or file name. By the way, on this old ATT&T Globalyst the ~ is up
further in the typing line. Make any difference?

Type "dir /ad" and make sure the "Win98Flat" directory is
listed. Please note that DOS can't see the long name and
will display something like "WIN98F~1". If this doesn't
help, please repost with more information, including what
you copied to the "c:\Win98Flat" directory.

ok. W98FLAT is in dir. This is a Globalyst 380TPC that I'm rejuvenating for
my wife. Has win95 on it and I have win98SE disc after upgrading mine to XP
Pro. I copied the win98 to win98Flat because the win 95 os wouldn't accept
this upgrade without running win98 setup from ms-dos.(Microsoft windows 98
Second Edition README for Setup-April 1999) which leads me to the present
problem of setting up from win98Flat on the C drive.

Try typing "C:\W98FLAT\SETUP".

Go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and create a
Windows 95 version B boot floppy. Use it to start the
problem computer and it should assign "R:" as the drive
letter for the CD drive. Then insert the Windows 98 disk
and run the "R:\setup.exe" file.

Ben
Did the new bootdisk. It didn't come up with "R". It still comes up "C".
Should I examine earlier bootdisk possibilities?

As a matter of fact the message from F8 is Remove disks or other media.
Press any key to restart. It then goes to Win 95 screen.

Go into the BIOS setup and make sure the boot sequence is set to
"A:, C:". Be sure to save any changes when exiting. Also, the
downloads at http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
are programs that you download and double-click. They will not
work if you simply copy them to a floppy.
