I will be attending Iowa State this fall and I was curious as to which major I should take based off career options in the post-graduate world. Right now I'm in the freshman Computer Engineering path, but I can really switch to almost any Engineering concentration without a hitch (including (I believe) material; agricultural, etc.)
At this point in my life, I'm really into the hardware aspect of computers, but I do like some programming also. I want to be in a job situation where I get to design and build chipsets in either the graphics or processing markets. Is CE the right choice? Should I switch to EE?
Outside of jobs being outsourced (I plan on standing out from my class so I can get a job with either degree
)... what are some suggestions on which path I should take?
If you have experience in the either field and know what I can expect from the job market that would be excellent.
Thanks for your time.
Slit your throat in a cold bath.
Given that he's going to Iowa State, it will probably be a bubble bath with a bunch of rose petals and a mimosa.
Take the McDonald's path: "Would you like fries with that?"
Picture the scene. The fryers burst into flames, jorby runs of to a forum for advice and the blonde chick, with the nice tits, dies. Now some poor bloke is without his main squeeze all because you sent a person incapable of decision making into an environment he couldn't handle. I thought my answer through and found it to be the one offering mankind the best solution, a little more thought next time please.
I thought for sure that I wouldn't be the first to get it out, but...
DIE NEWB DIE!!
BTW - read the FAQ at the top. Your question would be better answered by going to the advisors of both departments...
cool.
I apologize. I didn't realize cute girls worked at other McDonald's. The ones around here resemble Big Macs and deep frying them would probably add something special to the menu.
I'll have to heed your wisdom next time I'm presented with this opportunity to advise an idiot.
I'm getting the hang of it...
How about some truly constructive advice, like he should just sleep on his decision overnight? At the zoo. In the lion enclosure.
alright you guys did it, you proved how witty you could be.
hence why I came here INSTEAD of going to a college advisor (remember its in their best interest to keep you in school regardless of what they tell you)
so if you have any experience in the field I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks
That also has it's value. I can see the local headlines 'Big Cats Eat Large Pussy'.
*cue joke drums*
Real advice?
- Don't ask anybody to tell you what the "right choice" is because only you can decide that.
- Don't worry about any hitches in credits by swtiching between majors. You're a freshman? Plenty of time to switch around. I changed majors as a junior.
- One of your goals should be to stay there a while. Done properly, those are some of the best years.
There, now I feel dirty. May I go back to ragging you now?
please do, as per reading the 'sticky,' I can't expect anything else
I won't mention this to anyone.
FLAME ON!
How are we to honestly tell you the better path for you to take without knowing the skills you have or your integrity?
If we sent down you a path, we may eventually have to deal with the crap you could work on.
Don't put that pressure on us.
Find a company you want to work for or a company that does want you want, email their HR department or talk with one of the managers.
And for our sake, get a damn internship and that'll explain it all for you. They'll expose you to everything.
Nothing but a bunch of retards going to school without any work experience, coming out thinking they're God's gift and then they can't get a job making $40k a year. They get the $12/hr job and can't pay off their $100k debt because they don't know how to work. They know how to read a damn book and fill in multiple choice questions.
If you know that it's in their best interest to keep you there then research both curricula, go into the discussions with a skeptical mindset and have specific questions prepared.
go with ECE degree that way you have a broader scope for your career fields, when completed of course.
That display of kindness has moved me to tears, of laughter.

How old are you? Talking of the best years! STFU, grampps.
And don't forget to take the I.D. 10-T courses.
sorry I.D. T-10?
and also, how about a co-op? Right now that's what I'm shooting for, since although you have to take a semester off school, the oppourtunity to get real work experience and get paid for it is probably the best possible option
ID10T
as in idiot
as in msce + friends (im assuming)
yeah coop is a good way to get your foot in the door man.
