Hi Guyz , I Have a MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum + AMD 64 3000+ (939)
I Want To OverClock My CPU , It Runs az 1800MHZ By Default , and I have AMD Stock Fan (in The AMD BOX) ... How Much Can I OverClock My CPU ? What MHZ ? and When I OverClocked it to 2000 MHZ The System Crashed !! Now Please Help me and Tell Me For Gaming is it really Important to overclock the CPU ? (i have a GeForce 7800GT and 1GB TwinMOS DDR 400)
Please Help Me !!

It helps gaming, but not nearly as much as overclocking a videocard will.

Every CPU is different. There is no set amount you can overclock it. Some might be 10 Mhz, some might be 800 Mhz.

First off, get good case cooling. Then, makje sure you have a decent CPU cooler, and that it's affixed with Arctic Silver instead of the thernal tape it comes with.

Raise your FSB by 20 Mhz and see whart happens. Make sure the CPU doesn't get too hot, and see if it can run stress tests without crashing. then repeat.

There's alot more to it, like tweaking memory and hypertransport for stability, but those are the basics. Here is a good primer for overclocking the Athlon64s... READ IT ALL!

When you say "When I Over Clocked it to 2000 MHZ The System Crashed!!" I assume that you did so by raising the CPU freq to 222Mhz (222X9=1998Mhz) or there about.
But remember! when you raise the CPU Freq you are also raising the HTT bus to 1110Mhz (222X5) from its normal 1000 (200X5) and your ram speed to 444Mhz (222X2) from its normal 400Mhz (200X2) (If you have an older 64 this will all be based on an 800Mhz HTT, but same theory). Your HTT bus and Ram may not work much above their 1000Mhz & 400Mhz norms.

In order to obtain a higher CPU freq (my 3000+ (939) Venice is OCed to 2400Mhz!) you will need to decease the HTT and Ram multipliers to keep the HTT bus and Ram stable. You may additionally need to increase your Vcore to 1.5 or so as well.
Your HTT mult. should be deceased to 4 and your Ram Freq should be set to 333Mhz (that sets the appropriate divider for the Ram)
That will give you more room to raise your CPU freq before instability sets in.
When figuring Ram speed:
When Ram is @ 333Mhz, (CPU (freq) X 2) / 1.2 = Ram speed in Mhz
When Ram is @ 266Mhz, (CPU (freq) X 2) / 1.5 = Ram speed in Mhz
HTT bus is; CPU (freq) X HTT Mult = HTT bus speed in Mhz

First off, such topics should be under "CPU"...just for future refernce.

Venice, Winchester?

Regardless, but the 90nm should produce better results.
The stock cooling coming with current A64's is quite capable actually.
Before I had my Zalman 7700, I had to use stock.
I applied some AS5, and did a proper burn in trying to find a stable OC
while lowering the Vcore. I was @ 245 x 9.5 idling 36C load 45C when I
finally got my HS/F. Keep in mind this was with a 3200+ though.
The biggy about the 3000+ is the low multi, usually meaning you'll reach
your limits on the CPU before you do on your Mobo or RAM.

2.2ghz would mean 3500+ speeds...however your not going to see a HUGE difference. But like above, if you make 2-2.1 on stock solutions, with acceptable temps...your doing just fine.

EDIT: Didnt thourghly read his post. @ 2000mhz, its possible heat was your issue. I doubt this highly. Could be your PSU, RAM...a multitude of possibilities.

You can do much higher than 2.2 with a good air cooling setup, prozac.

The Thermalright XP-90 is a good cooler for not too much scratch. 2.4 to 2.6 is doable if your CPU is oc friendly, maybe more.

Water cooling is far from necessary...

OK , I OverClocked My CPU in 2 Ways :
1- I start the computer , press del to go to setup , then in cell menu there is an overclocking option (D.O.T=Dynamic overclocking technology) i use it in +3% , when i came to windows my cpu freq is 1856 (fromm 1800) Then I Go to Need For Speed Underground 2 and in about every 2 secends the system hangs for about 1 secend , i exited the game and disable the DOT
2-I go to Windows and use my mobo`s (K8N Neo 4 PT) OverClocking Program (Core Center) i OverClocked it to 1899 MHZ in FSB 209x8 !! and the Game Rus Cool !! without hitching !! but when i raise it to 1950 MHZ the system totaly crashed and have too use safe mode in order to make my computer Work !!
Now PLEASE HELP ME !!

I know, I meant with stock AMD cooling, I didn't say aftermarket like Zalman.

excuse me?? my idle temp is 37degres and full load is 52 degrees. not bad eh? stock cooling afterall

Read my last post!
You don’t need to have some program OC for you!
You will NEVER get the best out of your machine that way.
You need to enter the BIO's by pressing the DELETE key right after the splash screen comes up and:

1. HTT multiplier should be deceased to 4 (from 5)
2. Ram Freq should be set to 333Mhz (from 400)
3. Increase your Vcore to 1.5, DDR SDRam to 2.7 and HHT to 1.25 or 1.3
4. Start raising the CPU frequency... You can probably safely start at 250Mhz, that will put your CPU@2250Mhz, HTT@1000Mhz and memory@416Mhz.

If you boot sucsesfuly, run Prime95 for 12+ hrs to verify stability.
If your system locks-up and wont boot after changing the settings in BIO’s, clear CMOS and try again at CPU@240.
If you run for 12hrs in Prime95 with no problems, go for 255, then 260 and so on.
I wouldn’t recommend more then 260-270Mhz.
Also remember to keep an eye on your CPU temps, you probably don’t want to exceed 60c under max load.

try to lower your CAS latency.... because at higher speeds, in oc, the memory is the problem, or better, change your ram settings to normal, just to see if it works better....Your RAM by default runs at 400 mhz, with oc it runs at 430+.... if at 400 mhz the Ram runs with agressive settings, u can be sure ur computer will not work very good overclocked, the system will crash etc....
