dual channel setup

I have 2 512MB Cosair XMS memory sticks in my system. This is the first computer I built, and until just now I did not know that for dual channel to work properly, you have to have the memory sticks in matching color memory slots. I'm pretty sure I do not.

so, my question is.... have I done any damage to the motherboard or memory? and second, are there any potential problems I would notice?

no damage done. You were just running in single channel
Only "problem" is a very small loss in performance.

I would double check the manual on the memory config for dual channel. Not every board uses the same setup.
