Ok me and my roommate both just built/building new computers.
I ordered my stuff first and got it last thursday but my cpu was smash and I've had to wait over a week to get it replaced, it "might" be here tomorrow most likely next week (I'm sorry to say that newegg + UPS=crap), so I have not built mine yet but my roommate has got his stuff and built his a few days ago. Anyway our systems are VERY similar but the main different is the processors, so I thought it would be fun to list the specs of both of ours and let the intelligent ppl of these forums decide which would be the more powerful PC. I'm curious to know (even if it's a guess) since I can't build mine yet to benchmark it.
So here they are: (I'll bold the differences)
MY System Opteron 165 dual-core
Zalman CNPS9500 LED
DFI UT NF4 DR SLI Expert 2GB OCZ DDR400 Platinum w/ 2-3-2-5 timings
Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS two XFX 7800GT's running in SLI
Roommates System Athlon64 4000+ San Diego Core Opteron stock heatsink/fan (yea I let him have the one out of my bust CPU box cause it had heatpipes)
Asus A8N32 SLIx16 (I think that's the full name, you know which I'm talking about)
2GB OCZ DDR400 Platinum w/ 2-3-2-5 timings
Creative X-Fi Extreme Music two XFX 7800GT's running in SLI
I think those are the major parts, I'm not gong to list PSU or case and stuff unless you guys really want to know.
Oh and we both have the same speakers (Klipsch 2.1 Promedia) and monitor (Gateway 21" Widescreen LCD). And yea he copied off of me.
I do not think so on multi-threaded apps...
And doubt on that stock cooler that other dude is going any higher than around 2600MHz either, so they are equals, but one has 2x2600MHz...
Hmmmm....
plus 2x1MB cache makes me wish i had any money at all to buy something new and make my pc work fast enough when winamp word excel and firefox are opened simultaneously.
Why don't you and your roommate just whip out your cocks and get this over with...really though, you'll be hard pressed to determine who's is better considering you've got the dual core and his being single...comparing clock speed only, his is better, but he won't keep up with the pace when it comes to multitasking...for a better computing experience and all around smooth multitasking and usability, yours is better...I'd say yours is better from a cost per performance and longevity stand point...your roomy will feel the need to upgrade a year or so before you...
I say that they will be more or less equal, that is on solely single core apps, which are getting fewer and harder to find if ya are concerning with current software.
They will both run stable on air 2600MHz, at least the opty will for sure, so that makes them equal with a slight edge to dual core since it can offload and save some clock cycles for gaming that the single core cant....
But on current software supporting multi-threading aint no competition, he will be dusted by over 50% in most apps.

Nah we already did that I won't by a HUGE majority if ya know what I mean JK
I'm loving the feedback. I do plan to overclock for sure and he's debating but I doubt he'll get far with that cooler too.
Iam wondering do are CPU's directly compare just based on clockspeed? (despite dual core atm), I mean mine 1.8 and his 2.4 stock. I was under the impression that wasn't a good measure as the different cores worked slightly differently than one another and so you couldn't directly compare based on clockspeed (hence the ****+ namings)?
Yes, you have two of the Athlon 64 cores at 90nm with a E6 stepping.
When you overclock yours to 2.4GHz, they are equal, but you have two of them buzzing around at 2.4GHz, which, btw, will be very easy to get with your RAM...
That would be 270x9multiplier for 2430MHz, and start with looser timings such as 3-3-3-8 to see how your temps maintain, and the Opty doesn't need alot of extra voltage, about 1.45 volts for that setting of 270...
