Are the two forms for SATA completely compatible with each other?

For instance can I plug SATA300 drives into a SATA150 RAID controller or plug SATA150 drives in to a 300 controller?

I understand that the drives would not increase in speed, but since there about the same price I figured I could buy the SATA300 drives for now and upgrade the controller later.

yes they are. Most drives have jumper for fall back compatibility with sata150. You'll want to set it before installing it
