Bob, as long as they just available in this pdf-format, the answer is no,
since bitmaps
can not detach from that format (thats what pdf is made for (among other
things),
copyright protection).

But there are charts available for san francisco at avsim, filename is
"us_sectionals_pack_1.zip".
But I'm shure you already know that.

Thanks Jan,

I do have those maps but was wondering if it was possible to use the PDF
ones, just in case. :)

Jan,

This is not strictly true. If you have Adobe Photoshop you can just drag
the PDF into it, crop out the sectional and save it in whatever format you
wish. I tried it last night and it works.

** Bob if you don't have Photoshop and want the jpg version just drop me an
email.

Or you can always take a screenshot of anything you want and get any type of
file surely?

Quilly,

Not quite so good as the output will only be as good as the screen
resolution. Doing it the other way you can zoom right in as per the
original. Your print screen option is fine as long as the zoom level when
you print the screen shows everything you want.

I have spent the last day trying to work out hot to get some maps out of my
UK OS mapping software for the moving map purpose. The answer appears to be
to print to a TIFF virtual printer. I can zoom out on the screen to show say
50% of the UK. I then print the screen view to a TIFF file at very high DPI.
The result is a reasonable graphic file that I can zoom in on. The software
I found also supports jpg and BMP.

I really apologize for the wrong information.

Of course it's possible, to extract the bitmaps in some ways
(screenshot, drag and drop it into an editor, or use the "extract
bitmaps option" from acrobat reader/writer) But as far as I
know, it will never reach the original's quality.

When I draw my germany-chart on the monitor in original
size, It would need ca. 8 monitors high and 6 monitors width.
(ca. 6000x8000 pixel).

A screenshot of this chart, as monitor-size-fitted, would make
it useless. I actual don't know, how much the reducing of quality
in an extracted "pdf- bitmap" is, but I think, perfectionists should
be prepared for the worst. O.K., that doesn't concern to small
charts...

Cheers,
Jan

Ps. Please excuse my english, I don't want to annoy someone, I
just can't do better. (You should have met my english teacher
to understand why!) Corrections welcome.

Jan,

Firstly don't apologise as a couple of months ago I would have had the same
view about PDFs. When you import them into Photoshop it seams to extract the
graphic at the same quality as the PDF, as opposed to the screen resolution.

I have put a large and small jpg version of the files that Bob referenced
using this technique here:

http://www.whatthelenssaw.co.uk/FS/

The quality is governed by the detail in the original PDF.

I have now managed to get the moving map working with some UK OS maps using
a "print to JPG" virtual printer driver. It's quite interesting, but I'm
not big on VFR so it's just a curiosity mainly.

Geoff

I seem to be having a slight problem with those files. Please right click
and "save as" if you want them.

Hello Geoff,

I took the file "SAN FRANCISCO 17 MAR 2005 big jpg.jpg" and
zoomed it into 600%
I compared this with the original PDF-bitmap, also zoomed to 600%.

I saved both shots as a tif-image, to prevent other quality reducing
through jpg-compressing.

please "save as"

http://mitglied.lycos.de/utstoni/original.tif

http://mitglied.lycos.de/utstoni/extracted.tif

The result seems to be clear, the quality is very different.
Didn't you zoom the pdf file? Maybe you just saw it in
reduced size and didn't note the high image quality?

Or maybe I missunderstand something?

Tell me pls :)

Cheers,
Jan

Jan,

Yes your shot is much better quality without doubt. Can you create a
complete output of that PDF page at that resolution in a single file, as I'm
not sure if you did a print screen or something else? I suspect PSP 9.0 was
involved along the way but I'm not sure in what way.

I've had a further play with it and generated this:

http://www.whatthelenssaw.co.uk/FS/FRANCISCO_print_to_tiff.jpg

I don't think it's quite as sharp as your 600% version but it's a larger
chunk, hence the question about larger outputs. I think I could further
improve the quality if I played with the settings but I've probably reached
my limit for today.

Let me know.

Thanks

Geoff

Unfortunately not, due to the problem I've talked about in
my first posting. The copyright protection thing.
Of course, if you are an unemployed puzzle-friend, there is
a way. :)

Yes, this was just a print screen.

Hell, are you a clairvoyant? It could have been PSP 8 or
any other editor. But you're right, PSP 9 was involved to
take the screenshots and save the files.

This looks very good, it exeeds all expectations i ever had in
this matter.

Do you handle with the Acrobat Reader or the Writer?
I do have the Writer available at my work an I could
check out tomorrow, if the writer has possibly more,
or more detailed extract-options as the Reader. (Unless
the document isn't protected).

Jan, Bob,

Firstly Jan I will answer your question, the PSP 9.0 mind games thing. I
don't know how familiar you are with digital imaging but the images often
contain information about how they were produced. I know it's called exif
with jpgs, but I'm not sure if the terms also applied to TIFFS. Anyway, if
you're running XP right click one of your pictures, click properties,
summary and advanced. Hey presto, have a look at mine and guess what I used.

As to the image that you and Bob seem to like, I produced it in the
following manner. I installed a virtual printer which performs a "print to
TIFF/JPG/BMP" function. When I tell it to print I specify lots of DPI for
quality. Once I have the output graphics file it's a simple case of doing a
quick crop to remove the unwanted info and Bobs your uncle.

If you or Bob (Not your uncle) want any further info on the last paragraph
please can you email me directly.

Regards

Geoff
