Hi. Strange thing happened to my machine: Left for dinner and the computer was running in powersafemode as it use to do when im not present. When i returned it wouldnt wake up so i tried to reboot but then it wouldnt boot up at ALL!!!(?) Checked the Graphic-card and noticed that the fan wasn't running(??) Cleared CMOS and made another attempt which also failed. Changed Graphic-card, - no improvement, even tried with a PCI-Graph.card. another Failure. I don't get it, what happened?? The CPU-Fan is running, and the PSU is working. What's going on?( Got a Geforce FX 5900 XT grap.card/ASUS MB-Intel 875p chipset-800FSB-dual DDR400/1Ghz RAM/U-ATA 150/ winXP pro. Help!!
so if you cleared your CMOS, i asume you machine posts. if you machine post's then its probably a hard drive issue. if you have a seconed HD, install windows and see if the HD is still mounting.
now if your machine doesn't post then it has something to due with the PSU, mobo, CPU, or memory. i know it doesn't narrow it down much : )
PSU's are easy to test you can buy a $20 PSU tester at frozen CPU. they have a nice one that i have, i really like it. for testing memory there is a program called memtest, it's a good program that is based on a bootable floppy disk.
the CPU and mobo are a little tickier. pretty much the only thing you can do is find another mobo to test the CPU. if the system boots then its the mother board if not, new proc. some times its both. its rare though so i dont think its anything you have to worrie about.
