DVD drive is angry

Hello, yesterday after plugging in my Sony DWQ28A IDE DVD Burner and turning on the computer it just shot the tray out. It pushed the tray out VERY FAST and then when I press the eject button the tray just twitches and does not go back in. If I force the tray back into the drive it just forces it back out immediatley after. The computer detects the drive and under My Computer the D drive is still present. I have tried right clicking and pressing eject but nothing happens. Since then I have unplugged the drive because it smelt of burning and was EXTREMLEY hot. I have also bought a new drive but I was wondering is there is any way to save the drive. I bought it OEM so I assume I cannot return it.
