Nvidia 81.98 driver problems?

I just built a new system with a BFG GeForce 7800GT card. Once I had it up and running, it was working fine other than this one problem that seemed to be driver related. It would randomly freeze my computer and when I restarted, windows error report would tell me that my video card got stuck in an infinite loop of some kind. I called BFG about it and they took me step by step through removing the old drivers entirely (even the ghost ones) and installing Nvidia's 77.77 drivers (which BFG assured me are much more stable).

I was wondering if anyone else with an Nvidia card had any similar problems witht he 81.98 drivers. If you did, please post here. I'd like to really find out that it was entirely the drivers and that my hardware is perfectly fine. Thanks in advance for posting.

My brother got the same error on his PC recently with his new 6800 GT. But I think he has only gotten the error 1 time.

We basically uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled with then drivers and he has not complained since.

my brothers.

you shouldn't get that error. these new cards are idiot proof. plug and pray. are you overclocking my brother?

if I got that error. i would uninstall the drivers as you did but also unseat the card and leave power off for 5 minutes and re-seat it.

wow. I hate those freezing errors. reminds me of the days of my AMD system with a sblive card.

Well, with mine, I didn't overclock it at all. Everything was straight from the factory other than the drivers that I got off of Nvidia's site of course. I'm just glad it's working better now.

another guy with a Geforce 5500 (like me) tried using the 81.98 drivers... his card wouldn't work. I refered him to the 71.?? drivers... and viola, it worked. :)

My new 6600gt came with 81.95 drivers, and i'ts running at 554MHz / 1170MHz and doesn't seem to have any probs at all, BF2 & F.E.A.R look fantastic.

I was about to update to 81.98, but do you think maybe I shouldn't bother?

b.t.w. is there any way I can check the core temp whilst running a game, whenever I check in windows it's always around 36*C, expertool allows me to o.c. to 600MHz/1200MHz but that puts it into the red zone and I'm worried it might cook whilst in a game under proper load.

I personaly use the 83.40 Forceware drivers, I don't think they are exactly legit but it has improved performance with SLI. In 3DMark 06 i went from 5900 to 6450, course I also adjusted the SLI rendering mode. tried 82.12 drivers yet? they are official beta's.

Nope, I'm new to modern pc's, only built my machine day before yesterday. Didn't realise loading older forceware drivers would improve performance, doesn't make sense to me!!

I thought beta meant unfinished/prototype??

BEta is unfinished but sometimes they work better, dont ask me why. its just trial and error sometimes with drivers. 82.12 has been out for awhile, and I never had any problems with them until i ran 3dmark 06 and the score didnt quite add up. Then i searched the forum and found 83.40 worked better.

I have an ASUS A8n-SLI board with BFG 7800gt. I am setting up this machine for my home theatre system, thefore I am using XP Media center edition. Loaded the 81.89 driver and my screen went black. went to safe mode and uninstalled the video drivers and when I restarted my screen was fine. reloaded 81.98 and the screen went black again.

Using 1016 bios for MB w/6,65 chipset drivers. Going to try a diff set of drivers see if that helps. Any Suggestions

Thanks

Sounds like there's alot of problems with 81.98, think I'll stick with 81.95 for the time being!

Surely nVidia must be aware of these issues... makes you wonder!

i am using 81.98 on an XFX 7800gt on an asus a8n-e and the only problems i have had is switching between desktop and game. sometimes when i do that the sceen will freak out and the game will just overlay itself over the desktop in a really weird manner. other then that they are fine.
