I can't get past the forst stage of windows update.
I get a fail message error code 8019019B

Any ideas what that means?

Try searching for "BITS" on the MS download site. The first one that coems
up is what the new WU uses. Try downloading this and see if you can access
windows update. It is the Bit Inteligent Transfer 2.0 protocol.

Try using the WU troubleshooter, found on the same page that gave you the
error code - it has excellent instructions for resolving your and many other
WU problems.
