I have a Pentium 4 2.8GHz processor, and I'd like to upgrade it to something faster. This time around, I'd like to go with an AMD solution, and I'd like to step up as much as I can. I'll be using the processor mostly for gaming.

What are my options for upgrading, and what do people suggest? I'm not concerned about cost.

More about : upgrade 8ghz pentium

Since you are going to be gaming you need to worry more about your video card and less about your CPU.

If your just gonna game, keep the processor you got and get a full blown graphics card. What board do you have? I have a 3.0Ghz P4 and it games pretty awesome using a 7800GT.

I've got a GeForce 6800 GT, so I feel pretty good there. I should also mention that I'll be doing some development on the machine (although not a ton).

So...is it a 'Prescott' core or a Northwood? Hyperthreading?

If you want AMD you gotta get another motherboard, no way outa that. 2.8GHz is fine for now wait till 2008 when ddr3 comes around...

I know that I'll need another motherboard ... that's part of the reason I'm upgrading (my P4P800 is a little old). I know my processor has hyperthreading, but I'm not sure whether it's a Prescott or a Northwood...

What AMD processors are top of the line currently?

I've say a A64 3800+ Venice, or a 4000+ (San Diego?) are pretty nice choices nowdays. I'd go for any of them. :D

That's an EXPENSIVE PSU. 8O

Indeed :D

Which is why I put a Fortron in the 2nd build :D

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll take a look at these!

Bloody hell, I never though a PSU could cost more than a CPU or GPU lol. That things cost more than a high quality set of speakers!
