I was under the impression that you could tune the com radio to the
frequency and just start using it. Every time I've tried in FS8 and FS9 to
direct tune the radio, I bring up the ATC window I still have to go through
the same hierarchy to get the radio tuned.

I just wanted to make sure that this is the way it is and that I'm not
missing something.

what do you mean.. Dallas?
the ATC pop-up window or actual radio tuning is causing grief?

Bring up the radio stack (or equivalent).. like Shift+2.. and either
click-click on the digits, roll the mouse wheel over the digits, or
even use keyboard shortcuts to tune. Be careful not to re-program
the [x] key.. it swaps the standby channel.

p.s. radios working beautifully here.. and get along fine with ATC :)

Example: I tune to the Tower frequency manually. I pop up the ATC window
and I'm not talking to the Tower, I am presented with the usual "Select
Airports" from list.

I guess you are telling me that it does work?

That's odd. Manual tuning works fine here.

Manual tuning normally won't work when you are airborne flying VFR.

You will have to manually select the airport as you approach it.

However, it will work if you are sitting at an airport.

But here in metro Chicago, there are two airports about 12 NM apart that
both use 123.0 for their CTAF. There is no way for FS to know which airport
you are intending to talk to.

Thank you for straightening that out... I thought I was going floopy! :)

haven't been able to reproduce the condition as yet. went for a Sim
last out of Miami on Pan Am but didn't spend too much time running
some radio conditions. We need to make up a test matrix; a) VFR..
b) IFR.. tower tuned.. tower not tuned.. etc.

What I've noticed is that if you DO NOT respond to ATC `contact
so-and-so' and tune manually.. ATC will go on to the next step after
radio is set to correct freq. Generally have no trouble and often tune
radios per ATC manually instead of simply hitting ENTER.. it's good
practice. Am working the radios a LOT during Sim!!

p.s. if this confuses the issue.. we'll drop it..

Hi Dallas

I started manually tuning my radios quite recently just for something
to do when flying in a straight line. Manual tuning takes a tad longer
than simply pressing the appropriate number.

However, I soon found out that when I wanted to ask a particular
question or acknowlege the presence of the 737 just about to crash
into me (mea culpa) that I still do have to use the keyboard options.

nah.. not for this.. they're best for doing math, curvefits, looking
at slopes, or plotting functions (charts).

p.s. maybe can check it out more tonight
- also have Mi24 Hind to install :)

Hi Gregory,

"nah.. not for this.. they're best for doing math, curvefits, looking
at slopes, or plotting functions (charts)."

Exactly, mate!

I don't know what Varmit was thinking when he suggested a Spreadsheet -
sometimes I wonder about that bloke!
