I only have a couple hundred dollars, and I am thinking about a small upgrade. I currently have a Pentium 4 2.2ghz socket 478 processor and 512mb of ram. How much of a difference would I see if i upgraded to a 3.0ghz proc and 1gb of ram?

Edit: Sorry, I think I should have posted this in the CPU forum.

Depends on the memory as faster memory means better performance. The processor... Probaly depends it will bring more performance on some programs than other programs :)

My motherboard uses PC 2100 ram.

id buy a new mobo then to :D  cause then you would have an 800Mhz front side bus instead of that tiny 400Mhz one, a gig will do you good if you use ram intensive games or applications. and is your other 512Mb pc2100? if so dont bother getting another 3200 stick because it will have to match the other ram and will underclock itself.

Yes! Of course! Less money in your wallet!

Do you really need more heat in your house with this severe winter?

The game is over! Don't waste money on INTEL! .. and specially P4!

hah i was gonna say the same thing but i dont think he wants to buy new everything.

you don't need to spread more AMD garbage... P4 3.0 is available in 478 socket, but I recommend a new mobo with LGA775 socket/PC3200. P4 3.0 is not bad... in fact, I have one, and it runs pretty cool. I have it overclocked to 3.24Ghz right now, awaiting faster RAM, so I can run it at 3.5Ghz. This processor is seriously fast!!! Way faster than a 2Ghz....

not that AMD is bad, but you don't need to throw crap on Intel.

hey windshear amd aint garbage! intel prescott is garbage especially after they made that commercial with apple dissin pcs   f*** intel!!!!!! now to the original poster get yourself a northwood not prescott if you must :(

If your mb supports NW core cpus, and at least asyncronous DDR 333 speeds (preferably 400), it might be worthwhile to find/acquire a Northwood "C" core 3.0 or 3.2...(the P4 did not gain a huge amount from 333 to 400 jump in DDR terms)

Find some PC3200, at least 1 gb....(Maybe you can sell/trade the 2.0 cpu and PC2100 to someone also using an older DDR board)

(A p4/2.6C will routinely keep up with or defeat the older "B" cores running 3.06G/533....)

If PC1600/2100 DDR is all the mb supports, I'd prob keep it as is rather than dumping more money into it, and begin saving for a 955/DDR2/8xx or 9xx series combo)

Oh come on. The northwood Pentium 4 HTT was a great chip. I still have mine and love it, although my X2 4800+ is a little better....
February 12, 2006 6:25:09 PM

Why would he get a new mobo and a new chip? that are both outdated btw

might as well just upgrade to a 939 mobo and get an amd.

However if you just want a 3.0ghz cpu, you'll also need to get some pc3200 ram. which will probably set you back ohhh about 300 dollars.
Make sure your mobo supports 800mhz bus.

see if its worth it to you to upgrade, or if you just want to get a whole new pc.
keep in mind that there are two new sockets coming out from amd and intel. sometime this year. might be a good time to upgrade once they come out.

don't listen to that dumbass saying prescotts suck, they're more power hungry than the northwoods, but they also oc higher.

I think I will just save up for a whole new computer. I have decided to go with AMD, but by the time I get enough money the AM2 socket with most likely be out.

Good choice, don't forget about intel though, things change really quick in the computer world.
They also have a new chip coming out based on the pentium M.
Supposedly its gonna mop the floor with amd, but we'll see what happens.

You shouldn't decide on your loyalty before something even shows up...

1st a few questions before I can answer your question:
what do you do with your computer?
What is your intended benefit from the upgrade?

and

what does the rest of your sysem look like? (especially motherboard mem and graphics)
February 12, 2006 7:30:17 PM

dont they already have the pentium m dothan core out for desktop?
February 12, 2006 7:56:40 PM

I do a lot of multitasking with my computer, and when or if I get a new computer I will be playing a lot of games. As for the rest of my system, I have an Intel motherboard (model D845EBT), a 2.2ghz Northwood Pentium 4, and a GeForce FX 5600.

He has Intel to work with and he can get a good upgrade on it. prozac i am giving him advice to go with nortwood didnt u read my post geez im not tellin him to go buy a brand new system for 2 grand!
