I guess you mean this one Wow, look at that price tag. Get the 4800, it's a lot cheaper.

To be honest take your pick. Have yet to see an Opty that wouldn't hit ~2.6ghz which is about the limit of most 4800+'s on air.

Yea an Opteron 165, 175, or 180 could all do it on air cooling easily and since the 165 is around $325 USD it's not a bad choice. :D You got to remember is that the Opterons are server grade chips so they are put through a lot strict testing and stock underclocked for redunancy purposes and server security. Plus they running cooling and on less volts

I've read (haven't tried it myself yet) that most 165 can hit 2.6Ghz on air no problem and most (depends on the stepping) can get up to 2.8-3.0Ghz on air!

the 180 or the 280 and 880 :D

If i buy a motherboard that is socket 939, but support for an Opteron is not specifically listed on the box, will an Opteron still work?
Im going to buy a new board, and Newegg does not list Opteron as a supported proc on their socket 939 mobo list.

I know the dual-core Opterons are 939 socket and will work with any 939 Mobo you might just have to update the BIOS if it doesn't read it right (same with the X2's) But no motherboard will specifically say "works with Opteron".

Providing it's nForce4 Ultra/SLI, all it needs is a BIOS update.

Damn it! you beat me too it! :P

Yeah, they overprice them since word got out...

Get this Opteron for $390 and overclock it to 2.6 GHz easily or 3GHz if you want....

The "denmark" and "toledo" cores of opteron and X2 respectively are very closely matched. So, you can buy a low end toledo at the 265 and overclock if you wish, or remain stock at a higher rated and get the same cache etc.

Dumb questions from somebody who hasn't been doing this in a while... how can you flash the BIOS without a CPU? If you need to flash the BIOS to get the MOBO to recognize the Opteron CPU... but you can't flash the BIOS without a CPU... well isn't this a chicken and egg situation?

I suppose you guys probably have a bunch of 939 compatible CPU's lying around?

Well I'm going out on a limb here and assuming that Dizzman and Wussy were not suggesting something that is impossible. So could anybody answer my question in a way that might be HELPFULL ?

Do I need to get a slot 939 Athlon in order to flash the bios on a 939 Mobo in order to install an Opteron ??

Look, unless it is dual core you don't need a special bios for the opterons considering they are so damn closely built to the X2's. However, if its dual core, anyway you can switch to a dual core bios will do.
