I think the opteron has a Venus core. Venus is much sexier than San Diego. Opterons are higher binned products. An A64 4000 probably isn't binned as high as that opteron.

i don't think thats fair to say. the Venice and the Sandiego core are identical except for the total ammount of cache. other than that there's no difference

some will "CLAIM" that the venice will Clock higher, but thats really neither been proved or can.

otherwise both cores are great CPU"s and will do you wonders. as for the Opty or the A64... if you plan on overclocking and wnat to see how far you can push tit... go with the opty. but again, there is no promise that it will overclock better than anything else. the CPU's are only guaranteed at their rated speed and pushing anything above that is a crapshoot

Any one got there 3700+ to 3ghz, my 146 will.

I dont think you can say opterons not overclocking better can not be proved, search the web, there are opteron overclocking threads with crazy results are every where.

I agree no gaurantee it will overclock better, but what have you got to loose if they are the same price and identical at stock.

You can't really compare these two unless you determine what is your application, memory and mobo. It is just not accurate and worthwhile to compare two CPUs in absolute.
