Hello All

I am new to this forum and to workstation class computers, and need to ask what you may think is a stupid question.

my office want to build a machine that can take two opteron dual core processors, SATA II hard drives in a RAID array.

For economic reasons I only intend to buy one processor, and one hard drive to begin with, and I will see how things go with the Photoshop tasks I am building the machine for.

However, I do not know if you can operate the motherboards with only one processor in place. I think I am right in saying that there is no problem in using only one graphics card.

Any advice or even a simple Yes/No answer would be greatly appreciated.

TQ

Yup, that's correct.
You can operate a dual opteron and video board with only "half" of it there.

I am currently using a dual Opteron dual video sli board now.
It's MSI nVidia nForce4 Pro K8N Master2-FAR board.
It will run with only one of each... not too hard.

I ran mine with one PCI Express video initially, then went sli a month later.
real nice I must say...twin 7800GT's.
I also run RAID 0 for performance.
Regarding the Opterons, it will even accept dual core so you can have a 4 core system in the future.

I built it for digital video work and it runs fine with two screens.
I also have add'l drive and OS for gaming only in sli mode, single screen.

So yes, is the answer, quite flexible are the MB today, enjoy ;-)
