Ok,
I have a AGP GF6600GT card with 128 megs.
There is a lot of talk about upgrades, what is best, etc.

So, I am asking if the 6600gt is good enough to play smoothly ANY game over the next year at max settings and at least 1024x768.
I'm only asking for a guess.

I will rather not upgrade until I get new everything in a year or so.

Ok thanks!

Probably not, especially with games like Quake Wars and UT2K7. At best you could run it at Medium-High on 1024x768.

You think UT 2K7 will be out before 2007?
Gee
that Geforce 6 is older than I thought.

Do you think UT 2K7 takes about as much power as say Elder Scrolls 4?
Far Cry 2?
GTA4 (this is a stretch)

anyway, it seems these next gen games will come out in mid 2006.

not a chance. i have a 6600gt and i have to turn down the graphics for the new current games at 1024 to maintain 30fps+. No way you will run FEAR, Call of Duty 2, even NFS: Most Wanted at good consisent 30fps+ 1024.

I wouldn't upgrade yet though. You can still play all the games, and you have to turn it down a little, but they still look nice. I'd wait for the next release - Nvidia's 8000 series. Those cards are due out in stores probably around fall. They will be DirectX 10 and have all kinds of good stuff like that. So wait and save, and buy a $300-$350 card this fall in time for all the new holiday releases.

Hi Guys,

I have a Chaintech GeForce 6600GT PCI-E, std setting are 500/1000, I have overcloked it to 550/1150. I get around 2000 on 3DMark2006 @ 1024x768.

I think the 6600GT is a awsome card for the money. I can play NFS:MW at 1024x768 at max setting with AA set to full. F.E.A.R I can play at some decent frame rates @ 800x600. COD2 i can play 1024x768 max setting no problem.

My pc specs :

AMD64 3000+ (1.8GHz) OC'ed to 2Ghz
1024MB DDR400 ( 2x512 running dual)
Chaitech VNF4 Ultra
120Gig HDD SATA - Seagate
Chaintech GeForce 6600GT PCI-E(500/1000) OC'ed to 550/1150
500W PSU

I am using a Radeon X800 XL and get 5,000 in 3DMark05.

Considering they cost about the same, and ATI is generally 'weaker' in 3DMark than nVidia, but performs nicer in many game titles, that ain't bad. (Note: I score similar when locking to 1 core aswell).

The Radeon X800 GTO and X800 Pro both have similar spec to the X800 XL, while costing less and scoring a damn sight higher than 'quote: 2,000' points.

The GeForce 6600 GT is an 'OK' card for the money, but there are better cards around for the same $$$.

PS: 3DMark06 (at 1024x768) is basically the same as 3DMark05, because 3DMark06 actually runs at 1280x1024 (your 6600 GT would die at this res in 3DMark05/06) by default, the only way one can run 1024x768 in 3DMark06 is by purchasing it. Are you 100% sure you didn't mean 2,000 points in 3DMark05 (which runs at 1024x768 by default) after all ?

It is more like watching a slide show at that score than a 3D demo surely ? (Not to be rude, really I want to know).

Yes i did mean 3Dmark2006 , @ 1280x1024 I get 1580 in STD clock/mem setting. I know the 6600GT is not the best card but is still perform very well.

I have the Advanced version of 3Dmark2006 so I can run aby setting I want.

P.S. I get 4000 in 3Dmark2005 when my card is overclocked.

True, but the new contender in the price range (in PCI-e anyway) is the X800 GTO 128, which can be as low as $140 last time I checked.

But as far as wether it's time to upgrade now of not... let me just say, the ONLY time to upgrade is when you OWN a game that you CAN'T play at settings you find acceptable.

Upgrading any sooner than that is a complete and utter waste. Hardware only gets cheaper and better, so unless you're upgrading for utility you need NOW, you are throwing away your money.

Just ask all the people who upgraded for Doom3 and HL2 a year before they were released...

The next round of games will have per pixel lighting, parallax occlusion, and a ton of dynamic branching dependent techniques. Also, DX10 is on the horizon (once all of the interested parties finalize the standard).

Can you play the games? Sure you can. You might as well buy an X850 with shader model 2.0b since all of the games will detect the older shader paths and allow the card to run with simple rendering compared to SM3.0. (That was sarcasm)

Your card will be alright for the time being but there are new cards coming soon to tackle the new games. Shader code is only going to get deeper and the dynamic needs to implement these new techniques will demand “Smarter” hardware. That is unless you don’t care about the image quality.
