AMD Pricing!

AMD prices as of Feb 13 reflects the Opteron as cheaper in some cases...

An Opteron 165 for $278 - A X2-3800 for $301
An Opteron 170 for $367 - A X2-4200 for $362
An Opteron 175 for $475 - A X2-4400 for $467
An Opteron 185 for $637 - A X2-4800 for $643

FX-60 for $1031
FX-57 for $827

An Opteron 170 (apparently the best Opteron overclocker) will overclock in most cases to just under 3GHz, which is the same as the FX-60 will do, but it costs more than $600 less...
Take notes if you must...

So is it safe to say that 2 of these 170 in a dual cpu mobo would perform close to a FX-60?

dvdpiddy you're a weird person in a good way, I notice one of your comment in the other forum and I think you were serious about it. You really confused me there :?

One 170 overclocked to 2x2600 (216.66MHz mem) on air with stock cooler would actually be a tad faster than a stock FX-60 in every aspect.
The chips are identical, minus 200MHz and the unlocked upward multiplier.

This isn't going to get anything but cheaper....which is sweet.

By summer, hehe, we should see what's left of the Opteron 165 & 170's in the sub 200 - 250 range. Provided AM2 debuts and Intel makes the cuts they plan to.

In that case, hell I just might OC a 170 on both my teenage boys machines.

NICE!!

I'de like to contribute with your thread with this info:
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2006/02/15/amd_price_cuts/

AMD has taken the axe to prices across its desktop, mobile and server processor line-ups with particular emphasis on the Opteron range: server chip prices were cut by up to 54.2 per cent, some older models were dropped and new dual-core 2xx and 8xx series parts added to the range. It also rolled out the Mobile Sempron 3400+.

Really nice to have excellent processors from AMD at affordable prices.

The 170 is a dual core; he means that *one* of these (dual core) processors OC'd to 2.6 GHz will perofrm identically to an FX60....

(You can not run two of the 1xx series of processors in a dual processor mb; 2xx processors are required)

170 (10x260) vs fx60 13x200
170 would be the clear winner here, with a higher bus. However, FX60 is an easy to overclock chip with unlocked multipliers. also, it has a superior memory controller which means it could probably hit htt of 320+, giving 260 a run for it. being 600 dollars more doesn't really compensate for this though unless you want the most powerful chip your hard earned dollars can buy.
by the way, i thought AMD was phasing its 939 opty's out?

Keep in mind that the FX-60 reportedly tops out just under 3GHz... That is precisely what the Optoeron 170 tops out at, just for $600 more.
From a performance standpoint, it seems both will overclock to the same result, minus $600 or so.

880 is for multiple CPU motherboards. the 880 support a total of 4 more processors on a single server board. It is a 2.4ghz dual core processor. So, 4 of those would be 8 opteron cores at 2.4ghz! That would easily be the most powerful (and expensive) machine money could buy.
