External hard drives Firewire & USB 2.0

I have a few external drives setup. Some are USB 2.0 and others are Firewire.

Occasionally the USB drives disappear and cannot be accessed.

I just tried to add an combo case, but neither the FireWire or USB 2.0 is detected.

I am using XP Pro (SP2) which is about 8 months installed.

Any suggestions?

  1. I suspect this is an XP bug / problem.

I have no problems with my drives under Linux.

You can verify if it is hardware problem or a software bug by using the exact same hardware under Linux.

The Knoppix Live Linux CD and DVD is perfect for this because it boot from optical drive without requiring an install and supports FAT32 and NTFS http://www.kernel.org/pub/dist/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V4.0.2CD-2005-09-23-EN.iso

PM me if you have any questions.

    Good luck :D
  2. Did you upgrade the windows to fix it. I used to have the same problem with the usb 2.0. After pulling out any usb devices, the usb then cannot be detected and I have to restart the computer to be able to do use the usb again. I wend to Microsoft.com and updated everything and it fixed that problem.
