Hi my girlfriends got a laptop a couple of years old bought ealry 2003 i think.
It has a Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz processor. .13 microron (u). 100*4 = 400Mhz FSB. Says its socket 478, makes no mention in cpu-z or BIOS or on the acutal chip of being a Centrino or Pentium M or whatever.
Would i be safe to assume this is a bog standard pentium 4 ?
Anyway im pretty sure its having some problems. I want to change it for a Pentium M. Is this possible? As far as i can make out its a socket 478 what socket do Pentium M's take ?
What is the difference between socket 478 and 479 ?
firstly centrino is not a cpu, its an umbrella term for a system that has a certain chipset, cpu and wireless card. there are also two types of pemtium 4 used in laptops. one is a pentium 4 which has reduced power the other is a standard p4 with a different connector to make it compatible with a laptop mobo. they had the names mobile p4 and pentium 4-m. i can't remember which one was which though.
i would assume that being different chips the pentium-m wont work in a 478 socket and as far as i know a socket 478 has 478 pins and a 479 has 479 pins. just look up the knida chip you want to buy and it will tell you what socket it uses.
a processor with a different pin arrangement will not work with a different socket. i believe the two types of chipsets compatible with pentium m's are 855 and 915. check which chipset you have then check with intels website for compatibility
