I've got a P4 1.8GHz 400MHz FSB on a Gigabyte GA8IE with i845 chipset (DDR 266 max). This board isn't so good for oc-ing couse it doesnt support
any type of thermal monitoring or cpu speed detection, so I dont like it.
It does support FSB533MHz then cpu is running ot 2.4 on stock cooler so I'm sure is that wise.
Would I have any benefit of buying an used board with i865 chipset(found Epox for around 60$) and 2x512 DDR 400 and overclock cpu only.
How far would it go.
I also have an GF 6600gt so a more speed to cpu could benefit overal performance.

Do you know which core stepping you have? The later the core stepping, the better chance you have for a good overclock. I would bet you have a "B" core on that 1.8 and if you can get 2.4 then that's pretty good for that chip. I have an old 1.6 that would do 2.13 on the 533, but not much more. Yours may do better than your current 2.4 with a new board, but it probably won't go a lot further.

Your 2.4 on the stock HSF isn't a problem as long as you haven't increased the core voltage too much and you're watching the temperatures.

I've never had any success trying to get clock generator software to overclock a board that doesn't allow it in the BIOS, so you may be out of luck with an Intel Mobo.

With a "C" stepping Northwood, on the right motherboard you should have a reasonable chance at something close to 3 GHz. on air.

not sure what stepping is, but cpuz info is:
family: F
model: 2
stepping: 4
ext. family: 0
ext. model: 0
revision: B0
hope that helps. my curent bord doesn't have option to change voltage,
but cpu did run overclocked at 2.4 FSB533 for 5 hours encoding DivX.[/img]

there's a difference between Intel chipset and Intel motherboard... Intel chipsets are very high quality and very good for overclocking, Intel mobos, on the other hand are very crappy, and good luck trying to overclock at all with one of them, unless you have a pll changer or software.

So you've got a "B" stepping so it's not going to go too much farther than your current 2.4. Bear in mind, there is variability within each stepping, so you may be able to get more, but overall the B steps were kinda limited to the 2.4 to 2.7 range.

my mobo doesn't have option to change voltage, would that run stable all the time. do I need a better cooler. a
