actually, super computers would perform terribly in a gaming environment considering the extreme latency.
February 22, 2006 2:45:25 AM

I know which is why I included "octuple parallel based GPU" (8 cores), in the question. Just imagine a parallel based intel or amd system with an nvidia or ati similarly designed gpu. I'm sure it'll happen some day. :)

Hasn't happened yet :o
Fact is, GPU's don't do any calculations whatsoever. Nobody working on gene splicing is going to need to play doom3 at 2048x1600..

I did hear there was a supercomputer either made or being made that was using nothing but GPU's, not sure which ones, but it is proven that a GPU is much more powerful computational wise, then a CPU.

You never know.. :)
February 22, 2006 10:50:59 AM

Actually, that is incorrect. Check out this link at New Scientist magazine published 6/10/05 proving a GPU can do some serious calculations, even 12 times faster than a single CPU. Link

Woot! I do agree a Supercomputer isn't for gamers, but one of these days Parallel Based computing will be on our desktops and GPU's by then will be much more powerful then they are these days. Anyways, we need to get more on topic. Who's next? :-)

No - a cpu is better in most aplications than a gpu.

A gpu is simply a specialised cpu to takle certain limited porblems.

Now problems of these restricted type do occur with markov chain work in genetics where you need large numbers of simple calculations, the specialised gpu out performs a general cpu.

However for 95% of models and calculations of small volumes a CPU will be the best performing.

First I have to say Ive been with THG for many years. I've also was a computer technician for 12 years. Now I do purchasing for a very large hardware company. I have seen, played with, and broken just about every piece of hardware you could imagine from 486 Intels to quad gpu setups. I must say I have never felt the need to register and post here.
I did for 1 reason only. MadModMike.
Now MadModMike claims he has worked on and owned everything there is to date. My question is what computer tech hasnt? Thats what you do when your a computer tech, you build computers, whatever the customer orders or brings you. So my point is any $10 an hour moron can be just like MadModMike.
I have read hundreds of his posts on this site and have come to one conclusion. MadModMike is a big jackass. His posts are rude and full of hate. He's very immature and is also a biggot.
From reading this ridiculously stupid "Read this before buying a computer" post I can only conclude by looking at this post that his knowledge is at a level somewhere other than he thinks it is. Any noob can get better budget or gamer system recommendations from Maximum PC for $12 a year, and I assure you they are a much more reliable source than MadModMike's $.02. Especially the part about buying a raidmax case and adding a 430 Antec power supply, When you can get a Antec case w/450 power supply for over $30 less. Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E1681...
Theres a good piece of advice!
Secondly some of those prices are high. Newegg is great but they dont always have the best price. Check out zipzoomfly or monarch computer, they can usually beat any cpu price newegg has.
Take the advice here with a grain of salt. There are a million people here who think they know what they are talking about, Some of them offer you advice without even being asked. Beware!

STICKY. What would be nice is if this thread is updated regularly. It would be hard on MadMod, but extremetech and arstechnica do not update their build rig as often as I'd like because two months after the thread is posted most of their gear is either a) been replaced by a better product b) major price shift, it sucks seeing their mobo recommended for 120 and then check it out and see it for 140. anyways good thread Madmod.

I somewhat agree with what MrsD had to say about mike being biased, but mike isn’t giving out completely wrong or bad advice. I tend to lean toward AMD myself but I don’t think Intel products are crap. It is quite the exercise in futility to try to be completely objective so for my $0.02 worth mike shouldn’t be considered THE expert on building a pc but he does give out helpful advice to those who are looking for it which is what I think he is trying to do.
As for my advice to those looking to build a comp, keep looking for more advise, I combed the internet forums for months before my first build a year ago. Trust me when I say I ran the gauntlet of Intel and AMD fanboys and I’m glad I did.
and mike thank you for your efforts to help those who know they need it.

I heard that once before i wonder if its true?
February 22, 2006 6:23:25 PM

MrsD, you're a bigger jackass for making that retarded post. Yes, mpjesse had a reason to get mad, yes others did too, but you had nothing done to you, you started in insulting me and my intelligence. I guaran-Damn-tee my knowledge exceeds yours by far, and the fact that I recommended a Raidmax case and that PSU, is because 1) I've used Raidmax before, you probably haven't, and they're fine cases for a budget person, and 2) W/ hat seperate PSU, it will be better then any PSU inside that case. I'm tired of this crap, in the passed week, almost a dozen new people came on just to flame me, and it's disgusting.

I'm not claiming to be the best system builder, nor to be THE expert, but I do know, I know alot about a little and a little about a lot, I never claimed to be The God of computers, nor is anybody on these forums, please stop putting words into my mouth. And thank you everybody who found my post helpful, those were suggestions that I also noted could be changed or modified to suit you, but that is a good start, I think, for building a computer, and no where did I say that was set in stone.

Okay, I will admit, I was ALOT impulsive on some posts, but because readin somebody calling me "son" pisses me off, but I still have respect for mpjesse, ltcommander, etc. because they know something about computers, you sir, or ma'm, need to shut up because you have proven 1 thing in that post: you're a bigger jackass then me.

As I, nor anyone else in this forum wants to hear either of your bitching, both of you should shut it. This should be to help newbs or even pros decide what kind of coponenets to order and to add and help, not to be rude and angry and piss each other off.
February 22, 2006 6:41:11 PM

AK, this is like TV, you don't like what you see, change the channel. And for the record, I am not the one to degrade this thread, I posted at the beginning and MrsD and Windshear decided to call me AMD Biased and a "jackass", which I assure you I am not the former.

I rest my case. The immaturity just gets worse when he gets mad. This is a public forum, what gives you the right to tell me to shut up?
Ive read many, many, many posts where you belittle people, call them names, and disrespect people. Not just cause one guy called you son. Grow up.
And how is a raidmax case with a Antec 430ps gonna work better than a Antec case with a Antec 450ps????? Hmmm.....Guru??
February 22, 2006 6:47:48 PM

O well, end of the "MRSD posting".

.....More importantly: If people wish, I could update this with your suggestions and comments every so often, try to keep prices updated and changing it enough to people's suggestions, thanks those that recommended things, I will accomodate you.

Agree this should be a sticky. My only suggestion would be to do one or a couple as more gear to entertainment rather than gaming. Something like this:
Antec LifeStyle SONATA II *$99.99* *$99.99*
*
EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra Socket 939 *$105.00

SAPPHIRE 100143L Radeon X1300PRO $101.0
*
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800 *$295.00
*

Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (2 x 1GB) *$163.50
*
SONY Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy *$9.99

Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600JS 160GB 7200 *$77.00
*
LITE-ON Black IDE DVD Burner Model SHW-160P6S - OEM *$37.99
*
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic *$121.99

Logitech THX Z-5300e 280 Watts RMS 5.1 Speaker - Retail *$135.99* -$20.00 Instant

*Subtotal:* *$1,127.45*
February 22, 2006 7:03:48 PM

ok i see.
February 22, 2006 7:51:53 PM

This is not necessarily aimed at you Mike so take it lightly.

What we have to remember is, we're all here for a reason and that is to help each other. People come here seeking answers to questions that we can generally answer and do a good job of. The thing is and even I have to remember is this, we were at one time seeking these same answers people ask of us today. Make sense?

The other thing is this, there are two major processor manufacturers out there competing for supremacy. These two manufacturers regardless of who is better than the other, should be recognized as people will use one or the other. Never and I stress never, should any opinionated thread, especially one that is destined to become a sticky unless the title clearly says otherwise, be biased at all. This creates problems and for those who seek information for Intel or AMD may find it unappealing.

I do applaud Mike for his efforts and this thread is helpful however, there is a choice whether we like it or not and we must remember the two things I stated.

Peace, love and harmony to all

~Luminaris~

Luminaris, you make good ponts. I think the other problem with a sticky is keeping it up to date. It's just too bad there isn't someway to save all the work Mike put into this.
February 22, 2006 8:36:34 PM

I used to run my own Web Server (as well as Email, but that is hard to run), when I get some RAM for the beast I could bring my site back online, that's an idea.

Luminaris: Good point, and thanks for keeping it civilized and respectful.
