i just recently overclocked my 3.0 ghz socket 478 prescott to 3.45ghz. i am wondering if my processor is running hot, it idles around 45-48C is this to hot?. i do have a zalemen cooler on it
Should also take in consideration of good air flow, position of case (floor or on desk), or other components that give off heat, like Power Supply.
Things I could share on my observations from my systems:
My northwood is running 41-43C idle on stock heatsink, OC 2.9. Case 30C. 54-55C on load.
It is not on the floor where cool air would reside.
OC to 3 ghz, it sits more on 44C. Loads I see 57C.
My AMD 1ghz Athlon on the other hand, is running 47C idle on Stock. Case 29C.
I know this CPU could run cooler with it side off. Though, it's case temp is lower then my P4 rig since it's on the floor, and not on the desk.
On a full load it reaches 50-58C. Room temp will affect this system more dramatically.. heh Case design... sucks.
My Dad's AMD XP 2400+ was at 50C idle with the side off.
A while back I did clean it out the heat sink, can't image how hot it was getting (Heatsink looked like it was growing a beard). Last month I changed out the stock heatsink he got, used AS5 got his temps down to 38-40C idle, with the side off. Load temp was around 47-48C.
However his Case temp still registers 50C with the side off. I think his power supply is causing most of the heat problems to begin with. And his system sits on the floor to catch cooler air.
