I had an absolutely horrible experience going to a Technical school.
What has been everyone's experience here? Good? Bad?
I went half-way through a Bachelor of Computer Science degree at DeVRY in Calgary, Alberta Canada.
I had hoped it would be a general set of courses that would lead to some very advanced training. My main interest was building and servicing PCs, networking design, deployment, server deployment and admin.
I later dropped out because it was designed for people who never even seen a computer before and very entry-level programming. There was more general education (Math, Economics, Sociology, Psycology, English, etc.) than computer related courses.
They taught you how to turn the PC on and how to type a letter. I had taken this stuff already in grade 7......
A year later a few lines of code in C+ (by someone from Sweden I couldn't understand. No offence at all to Swedes ) and COBOL were taught.
Half-way through I was taking accounting, technical writing and basic Linux script editing. (of course they didn't even teach anyone why someone would use Linux, how to use it, install it, distro differences, etc. etc) Thats when I dropped out.
I had a GPA of 4.0 and never opened a book. Even during open-book exams they sat under my desk.
I'm not trying to brag, as I'm the first to admit I'm no genious. It was just WAY too easy. They didn't offer anything beyond the basics. (even the basics were lacking. Never learned how to build a PC, hardware diagnostics, viruses removal....)
I know this is just my experience, but I met many students that had similar complaints of NAIT and SAIT.
I have a political science degree from a respected university.
I lived on campus for the first two years; I drank beer, womanised where possible, smoked bongs and partied my focking arse off.
I didnt leave one stone unturned and thoroughly enjoyed my time there; I'd give my lefty to go back and do it all again! I miss those days with a passion, but dont lament a moment I spent there. No regrets and no disappointments.
ABL will love that: fresh dudes with a sense of humour are always welcome in the basement; although I'll doubt you'll stand the heat as a noob.
Ever had a virtual jack up the arse? Dont sweat it, a lad's fist will be along shortly...kind of like a night at Lombok penitentiary and pending your perverse sexual preferences, you may just enjoy it.
OK... i'm going to refrain from the usual DIE NEWBIE DIE because I actually had the same experience.
I attended 1 semester at DeVry in Federal Way, WA (just outside Seattle). I too dropped out because I knew more about PC's than the stinkin' teachers. Also, it was extremely evident that the teachers had absolutely no clue how to use any of the equipment, like the brand new $10,000 ocsilloscopes.
It was a sad experience. I found out that 2 of the 5 instructors I had were fired for using fake credentials. Turns out I really did know more than a couple of them. It was a really, really nice campus. Everything was brand new. Only problem was all the teachers sucked.
Anyways, it didn't really hurt me. I don't work in the IT field, but I make pretty good money in the Security field. So... whatever. :-)
One of our instructors was fired as well. She was supposed to be teaching business math. The only way she knew how to teach the math was tell us what buttons to use on financial calculators.
Problem was, we all had different calculators, so she didn't know what to do. We took a few tests and the class average was about 30%. We all flipped out on her and she took the tests back from us and "re-marked" them.
She crossed out my 32% and gave me a 70% lol. My girlfriend went from 40 something to an 80%.
She got fired when the dean found out.
Then another instructor got let go for sleeping with the students.....god she was hawt...
Anyway, I don't regret it. Just going to the school landed me a job with IBM. There was always a party to go to and the girls were very friendly....
I too dropped out because I knew more about PC's than the stinkin' teachers.
That is scary... We all know your computer credentials couldn't fill your jock strap... BTW, did you ever have the XXXXXXS jock strap custom made like you wanted?[/way to early for this shite]
Just think...if you would have gone to a real school you wouldn't be stuck in that job of cleaning out spuzz buckets at the local peep show.
However, we are here to help. Wingy has been looking for an assitant. It seems with advancing age it is getting harder and harder for him to work the shovel while digging up cadvers for...ermm...research purposes. There are also some nice benefits with the job...rotting seconds!

I highlighted the problem.
I had 2 roomies that were attending DeVRY outside Chicago. Not only did they not get taught well, they knew they were being 'raped' by DeVRY. This was more than 20 yrs ago. Good to hear they haven't changed.
What??.....Its rigged to a party popper full of roses to hide yer' ugly ass bung hole....However the thorns face Upwards which will make retraction painful. 8)
