want to do a little bit of sound recording / sound editing / gaming and listening to music but i have only ever had onboard sound
just looking for peoples comments on the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum eX card and external box
is it better than the on board sound on the asus a8n32-sli deluxe

It is a great card and you will be very pleased with any audigy 2 and up. I recently switched to from the audigy 2 to X-F1 and noticed a amazingly better experience. Not only does it sound better but easier to manage. Previous models had buggy software and crappy control panels. The X-F1 is true high technology. Consider that if your budget permits. Otherwise and member of the Audigy 2 family will still be a huge improvment over onboard sound.

Agreed, onboard sound is OK for casual use and gaming but doesn't support the quality if you're going to do any semi-serious tasks. Audigy 2 good, X-Fi best.
