2 Big Crashes, Now No Sound - Help!

A week or so ago, Windows Xp (Home) crashed during an
update and I had no alternative but to turn the thing off
manually. When I rebooted, there was the option to start
in various modes inclucing "last known good
configuation". That I chose. The puter rebooted with a
70s style screen and really really bad graphics. Taking
advice, I ran the recovery CD, but first I did a huge
abckup operation which turned out not ob e necessary
because everything, including my screen was there on
Startup this time.

Two days ago, it crashed again and I can't remember what
did it, but it looked like the XP equivalent of a "blue
screen of death" and this time the recovery disc insisted
on reintalling the lot, wiping everything else. I was
glad of those backups then, I can tell you.

Unfortunately, after reinstall, not only is ZoneAlarm
playing up complaining of dll files not found, but Norton
AV refuses to intall and I have no sound! I cannot find
out what sound card I have in order to find the driver
because all I get on Device Manager, after using the
Windows "Help and Support" feature are the following (all
of which are allegedly "working fine"!):Audio Codecs,
Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Devices, Media
Control Devices, MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device, Standard
Game Port, Video Codecs. Now, I don't think any of these
is the name of my Sound Card and I'd like to find out
what it is so that I can get it working again.

Any ideas please?

You may need to do a completely uninstall ZoneAlarm and Norton Antivirus
and then reinstall them to get those products working again (ask symantec
for a NAV cleanup tool too). They are very picky about being restored from
backups.

To find out the name of your sound card, the recommended source of
information is your computer manufacturer. Ask them. Failing that, you may
like to try Aida32 or Everest Home Edition (get them from
http://www.aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php). They can identify your card
from the plug and play codes.

The final option is to crack open your computer, read off the chip numbers
of your sound card, and do a google search.
