ok still a newb =p, but help me out here i'm learning still. i have a Gigabyte K8N Pro SLi mobo and it only has SATA2. So that scratches the idea of having a raptor. But i hate load times. what would be the fastest drives i can get for SATA2.

From what i have read off the net sata and sata2 should be compatible anyway you work. I would say a raptor should work on a sata interface but at sata speeds only.
I know you can run sata2 drives on a sata interface but havent found anything on a sata drive on a sata2 interface.
If anyone know if a sata drive works fine on a sata2 interface or not please post here. Ill keep looking in the mean time.

SATA 2.0 should be backwards compatible with SATA1, so don't worry.
If you doubt, either check the SATA controller spec sheets or the HDD spec sheets - they'll tell you too.

SATA and SATA2 drives and controllers are fully compatible with each other, the only difference is speed.

Here are all the possible combinations and their resulting speed.

SATA HDD + SATA Controller = 1.5Gb/s
SATA HDD + SATA2 Controller = 1.5Gb/s
SATA HDD2 + SATA Controller = 1.5Gb/s
SATA HDD2 + SATA2 Controller = 3.0Gb/s

I also feel that SATA2 is over-rated as even a Raptor cannot read/write data fast enough to exceed the bandwidth of SATA 1.5Gb/s.
