That depends on a variety of things (case flow, heatsink, stepping, etc). According to AMD it should be around 40-42C idle.

That white paper is a bit old though...

Yes that's fine. Generally seaking you want to be concerned w/ anything over 70C.

i have to disagree, over 55C can cause tons of early wear and stress. leading to very early failure.
70 is fine for intel, but for amd i dont recomend over 60C MAX

check your case temp, and also check to see if the heatsink is actually hot, the sensors are useually wrong. if it says 60 it might be 70.

I have "default" cooler that came in the box with the processor. Can someone post me a link from where to download some monitoring program? I took these results from uguru panel from my fatality board. Thanks for all the replies, although some of them freaked me out :)

Searching the net the other day, I came across a chart with "critical temperatures". Critical temp for an Athlon64 is 65C. My 4000+ is at 35C idle and 45C at load with stock cooling and cpu fan at constant 3080rpm. With motherboard's temps at 40c and 45c idle/load. I noticed the ambient room temp has a lot to do with it too. On a cold day when the room temp is around 65F, the cpu was down in the 27C at idle, my room is usually in the mid 70's and then I see around 35C at idle on the CPU.

err im new to the forums but err anyways..
i built a new rig 2 weeks ago and the first few days my athlon 64 x2 4000+ was at 19c idle and 35 at full load now its at 34c idle and rises to 45-50 at full stress. would this lead to early wear?? oh and i have cool and quiet enabled

configurations:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ Brisbane with stock HSF
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe mother board
Corasir XMS2 PC6400 2gb SLIready
