I have a Viewsonic G773 17inch monitor. The monitor works fine but I recently noticed a strange phenomenon.

Whenever I view the screen on white or light gray background I see what look like big fat scratches on the screen however they are not scratches and they look like my screen has lots of dust on it and someone took a finger and like scribbled on it. But its not dust nor scratches.

Could it be that some coating is wearing out?

It could be soap or oil residue from a cloth you used to wipe your monitor screen with.
Do you smoke or do other people smoke near your monitor? It could be tar build up from cigarettes.

I suggest using a clean and well worn cotton wash cloth damp with warm water and mild dish soap to clean your screen off with.
If that does not work try using a new cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Apply the alcohol to a test area such as a corner to see if it will react to the screen coating.
Considering you can use isopropyl alcohol to clean fingerprints off an acrylic CD it should not hurt your monitor's coating.
