I have a a nice, portable scanner which I bought at Radio Shack many years
ago. I used to listen to aircraft constantly until the frequencies became
so numerous and buildings were erected which blocked the signal from the
airport, it became more of a task than a pleasure. That being said, when I
did listen, I rarely heard any females at all, whether pilots or ATC.

FS9 seems to be quite generous with female voices both as pilots and ATC.
Is this real or just political correctness on the part of MS?

Now, if there are any ladies reading this, don't get your bras in an uproar.
I think pilots are great and if they happen to be women, all the better. In
fact, one of my flights from Charlotte N.C. to Toronto on U.S. Air had a
lady captain...my first *blush*. She made the best landing I have ever
experienced...maybe because I thought she couldn't do it : )

One of my good female friends is a senior captain and flies 747s out
of LAX to Australia and the Orient. I'd fly anywhere with her. She was
formally a COD pilot in the Navy.

I was on a flight last year and the captain welcomed us aboard over the
PA... female... there was a mutter around the plane. Then the first officer
came on and gave the routing... female... there must have been 100 people
saying things like two women up front.... genuine concern not just mock
humour.

Audible sigh of relief when we landed, then a round of applause. I have to
say it was a superb approach and landing in very gusty conditions. A real
greaser.

I was amazed that so many people are still so sexist... how can they believe
that a woman would be a worse pilot. If anything they are probably going to
be better as they have to prove themselves and fight their way through the
system.

Having said that, I was tempted to call out, 'but let's see if she can park
it'. But I thought better of it!

I use my trusty-rusty JD-100 from Sporty's on my daily commute to and from
work - listening to Teterboro, Newark, LaGuardia, Linden, and JFK...one out
of every 6-10 flights is a woman's voice.

A female friend of mine is a first officer with BA....when I was chatting
with a former work colleague about this, they told me how one of their
Muslim colleagues refused to fly on a plane where the pilot was a woman and
created quite a scene about it. Eventually, he got off and waited for
another flight, much to the relief/embarassment of those he was travelling
with.

Here in Europe there seem to be a lot of women working in ATC, and quite
a number of pilots. A former schoolfriend of our daughter is just about
to get her commercial pilot licence.

They don't call it the "Cockpit" anymore. It's now called The "Box Office".

Are you serious or joking?

It's hard to tell anymore. I just found out the beloved Sesame Street
cookie monster now eats vegetables because it's PC. I'm sure glad I'm
not a kid today...

Listening is quite fun sometimes. I have a (well, I had a nice scanner.
I think I left it in my Bronco) and used to listen to the Grand Canyon
Company freq on my days off saying YES!!!! when I heard the pilots start
complaining that the turbulence was getting out of hand. Those were the
days I really liked being off.

I've spent some time listening to Norcal Approach -- plenty of women
doing ATC.

Even way back in the early 80's we had many female controllers. I
remember one especially back at Ft Eustis. We took her for a ride and
after that we were always given priority.

As an active GA pilot who flies a lot of IFR flights in the northeast
US, I would say your sample of one is significantly flawed. :) My
home airport has six females of the twelve or so regular
daytime/evening controllers working tower, ground, and
approach/departure. Addditionally, there are many females as commuter
pilots, big iron pilots, corporate pilots, and GA pilots flying into
and out of this airport, as there are at any airport around the
country.

For a better idea of what the breakdown truly is, I would suggest
spending some time listening to live ATC feeds from this site:

www.liveatc.net

If you want to hear the females working ATC at my home airport,
especially listen Wednesday through Friday evenings (Eastern Time or
GMT-4) to the Syracuse, NY (Class C airport) feed.

Hi Beech45Whiskey,

Strewth, mate, it was easier just to type pr! :))

"....ATC at my home airport, especially listen Wednesday through Friday

Does that mean we might be able to hear some of your ATC transmissions
if you happened to be flying at the time we "listened in"?

I guess I'm making an assumption there, that your new family member
hasn't cut into your flying time too much??

Regards,
John Ward
