I have a 3.5" extenal USB SATA enclosure (bytecc).

First it worked great, then had intermittent problems, now its broke.

I took it apart, tested the power connectors ect, power is fine.

I replace the short IDE cable with a long rounded cable I had handy and now it works great again.

There is zero clearance top and bottom and the 2 inch cable needed to be folded to get the enclosure shut.

I am using a 6" carefully folded and there is a 3/8 inch gap keeping me from closing the unit. Duct tape is holding it together now.

I found an old mobile rack, but only one in is regular IDE the other has the wrong pin config an is soldered to the board :(

If anyone knows where I can get a 2-3" IDE cable (fairly cheap its to fix a $34 product) let me know.

Good suggestion. Thats where I got the two 6" cable I have now, left overs ffrom a SFF build.

The other 6" repaired my 5.25" external enclosure which also needed a new molex cable as well. These external enclosures don't take well to repeated drive changes.

Which is why I bought this

I can also buy a IDC crimper (took forever to determine that a 80 wire 40 pin ATA cable uses a 40 pin IDC connetor) for $19, plus $4 for a couple feet of flat ribbon and three connectors.

I could also buy a flat vice and canibalize one of the dozens of flat IDE cables I have laying arround. Sounds chancey but X-Box moders apparently do it all time.

Best of all bytecc emailed me back with a link where I can buy a 2" cable for $1, ($5.17 after shipping).

I really want to buy the crimper, but I just can't come up with a compelling need.
