Do I need more memory

Hi,

At the moment I have 4x256MB modules, with no room for upgrade. I use the PC for light web browsing, email, development with Visual Studio 2003, and games (COD2, BF2). I have noticed in many threads that people suggest 2GB of memory or more for BF2, but is the difference that noticeable. I currently run at 1024x768 with everything on medium (due to my 6600GT) and it runs ok. I do notice that every now and then it lags and reads off the harddisk. Would more memory help sort this out?

Thanks

Yes, the extra memory will help with that problem. The lagging and writing to disk is caching to pagefile due to insufficient memory.

Best recommendation would be to get 2 sticks of 1GB if you have the budget available.

In todays softwares etch. you only need 1GB of ram, about the 2GB you will only notice maybe about 6~9% performance boost..

:!: aviod using 512MBx4 (2GB)
buy 2 sticks of ram (1GBx2) for 2GB

Thanks journeyman, to be honest, im looking for an excuse to buy the RAM, kinda motivation for the girlfriend. its either house appliance or pc parts ;) thanks for your input.

that aside, do you know of any good 1GB memory? something that will work well with a X2 4400+?

IIRC, the reports about 1GB lagging up BF2 and 2GB helping occurs only when you use the high detail textures. If you're using medium textures, I don't think the RAM will help a lot. Might see better performance gain in using that money to upgrade the GFX card. A 7800GT or 7600GS (if you're still on AGP) maybe.
