dual channel ram processor dependant?

i just read a newegg review that said that the AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Newcastle 800MHz HT 512KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Processor does NOT supposrt dual channel ram?

i wasn't aware that a processor must be supportive of dc ram, just the motherboard.
is this guy just dumb or am i mis-informed?

Well, actually you're both misinformed. The memory controller must support dual channel. In the the case of Intel the memory controller is part of the chipset so the mobo chipset must support it.

In regards to the S754 Athlon, the memory controller does not support dual channel memory.

A CPU is very dependent upon Dual Channel, even moreso than what FlyGuy said. The reason your CPU has so many pins (ie socket 754 and 939 have 754 and 939 pins respectively) is because for every 1 pin on RAM, a pin on the CPU is required. In addition to that, for each channel (ie, dual channel) you need double that of the single, e.g., 184-Pin DDR1 Dual Channel would require 368 pins from the CPU, and s754 only has 184 pins dedicated for memory, which is why you only have single channel memory.

Newcastle is a socket 754 and 754 doesn't support dual channel. You have to get the socket 939 to get support dual channel. How memory operates is very dependant on the processor.
