i need to update my bios, so i decided to install the asus update utility, however it does not let me install, i get an error message saying:
NT service registry error! please reboot NT and run again.
and then when i press ok, its says:
warning! No ASUS motherboard detected. Installation will be aborted now.
i have an asus a8n-sli premium.
im thinking of updating from a floppy, but the problem is i cant find the bios file or the bios installer, do you know where i could find them?
i tried www.asus.com, but they only have the bios file, and not the installer (the one titled "AFLASH" or "AWDFLASH" )
thanks.
(also, when i update the bios, do i just reboot and everything is ready or do i need to reenter the bios settings and revert everything back to normal?)
I have the A8N32-SLi, and that comes with Crash-free BIOS 2, which means I don't need the installer (which was fortunate, as I can't get the installer, BIOS, and boot files onto 1 floppy due to filesize ).
I checked your manual, and it didn't specify the filename for the BIOS file using Crashfree BIOS 2, but it does support it. You could just try putting the BIOS .rom file onto a floppy and booting to see if it's recognised.

the problem i currently dont have a floppy drive in the computer, and my other computers floppy drive woudnt work in mine for some reason, so im stuck.
but jsut to tell you, i downloaded the 6.70 chipset driver and installed it...BIG MISTAKE! my whole computer got messed up. i found out that if i tried to play music, error messages would display and then the computer would just freez. I checked the sound options on the control panel but there was noe audio device recognised. i tried to reinstall the x-fi sound driver but in woudlnt let me.
i then went to hardware manager and then device manager and i saw exclamation marks next to:
Multimedia Audio controller
PCI Memory controller
SM Bus controller
and one on other which includes the Ethernet controller, other PCI Bridge device and RAID controller.
man my computer is really messed up. and all i wanted was to update the bios! i wish i had that bios 2 update thing that you had, or that my asus update worked (for some reason it doesnt), everything would be so much easier, and all that because i wanted to overclock my ram, and wanted to have the latest updates with that.
i think ill jsut have to resort to formatting again, although if you know anyway i could fix my problems, i might give it one last shot, thanks for all you help though, really appreciate it...
Sometimes when you hook up a floppy, you end up putting the cable on backwards, not on the board, but on the back of your device. Did you try flipping it ?
Also. make sure you get the right bios, and that you type the information in correctly when prompted to do so.
Are you able to remove the 6.70 nVidia chipset drivers then install the correct ones just to get your pc up and running again ?
how do i remove it? and what are the correct ones! the one on the cd? those are what messed up my computer in the first place. i messed around a little and now the only problem seams to be the sound, nothing works, and nothing is detected, except in the device manager, which is a little useless...any ideas?

Should go smoothly.
i tried that flipping thing, one time the lights of the floppy are always on, and when i try opening the floppy from my computer it says 'please insert floppy'. when i turn it around the lights are always off and i get the same message. dont worry, i think its the floppys fault, its very old. i have another floppy drive in my dads computer, ill try using that one tommorow and see if it works.
enough for today, i need some serious rest, i got a lot of work to do tomorrow, and if all works well, ill save myself a couple of hours of formatting.
thanks for the help and suggestions.
You can get the latest bios for your mobo by visiting the asus website. Look for the "support" section. Once there, there should be three small boxes on the right hand side. They will ask you what product or which board and what you need ...I think....been a while since I was there.
Just take your time and look things over before making your choice.
Once you have it downloaded, extract it to a folder you have made, or to your desktop, open it up and have a look. In it you'll see what you need to copy to your floppy, and one of the files will say something like.................... 1010 .BIN...... just using that as an example...... thats what you'll need to type in when prompted......
Anybody with knowledge please add to this. I can sit down and do what needs to be done, but I'm not much of a teacher..... if I missed something please add to this post.

In control panel, Add/Remove Programs, you can uninstall all the nVidia drivers (or just select those you want to remove).

ok i downloaded the file, its called '1011-005.bin' , so after i get this file i boot it with the floppy? i also heard that before this i need to install the latest chipset drivers, such as 6.70, is this true?
Back to the original issue of Asus Auto update not installing, I have the same issue. I have researched this through many forums, and there are a lot of people with this issue. The concensus seems to be that there are two main conflicts: Nvidia's chipset and early versions of the X-FI sound card can cause a conflict, and/or SP2 for XP can also cause a problem. I have a rather old Asus A7v600-X and recieve that same error issue. I also have an X-FI. My board is Via based, so the common factor appears to be SP2. On that note, I have heard that removing SP2 can resolve the conflict. THAT is something I have been hesitant to try.
Not exactly sure how it works...but.... when you boot up, it should ask you somewhere if you want to update the bios, or you have to hit the f2 key or something. You may have to look towards the bottom of the screen for instructions, not sure, but its there.
or you hit the delete key and go into bios and tell it you want to update it, but I don't think so.
If you have the book that came with the mobo, great, it will tell you there.
It will automatically find the floppy with the disc in it. Just follow instructions....when you type in, EXACTLY, the .bin file, it will then move on from there and install new bios.....it has to end in .bin... probably in capital letters.
It's not hard to do, I just can't explain it very well. I also don't do it a lot.
Don't worry about the chipset drivers til you have windows installed and you start to do your driver updates and stuff.

i was just on another thread and primus11 told me how to fix the update problem, it worked, this is what you do...
run regedit and change
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/wow6432Node to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/awow6432Node
i just updated the bios now, and all is fine, but now i need to fix the problem with the sound, i think i need to uninstall the nvidia drivers and then reinstall the correct ones, but i think ill run system restore and go back to the way it was before.

i updated the bios using system update, it finally worked!
as for the the sound problem, i have something wrong witht the wdmaud.drv file in the system32. Does anyonte know of a fix? the file is corrupt and unreadable.
I have an ASUS A8N - E and i wanted to update the bios from 1008 to 1011. I updated using the official ASUS updater and i got the same msg.
Then, after i rebooted, i got a msg saying REGISTRY CORRUPTED and i had to format the disk and install everything from the beginning.
I had installed all the pre required drivers, like nvidia 6,7, as specified from the ASUS website.
Stupid Nvidia drivers.
you had the same problem as me, wow, thanks for telling me that, i thought i was the only person who gets these kind of problems on computers, thanks for telling me!
man, guess i have a long formatting day today, i mean, its not the format that takes long, its after that, when you have to copy back or your files, reinstall all your programs and return back all your original computer settings....and the list goes on.
dude, that was the whole problem from the start, my drivers were all normal at the start, and then i downloaded the 6.70 driver and that is when things started going wrong.
