I was wondering which processor to choose for a small upgrade on an older computer, currently I have a athalon xp2600 I'd like to put into another spare parts computer to sell in order to get rid of some spare parts in my basement. The computer I want to put the new processor into is a Gigabyte Nforce 2 Ultra. Should I go with a xp 2800 mobil processor or a sempron 3000 processor at 2 ghz. both are socket 462 and I don't see how the sempron can really outperform the xp 2800 am I missing something or is there a place to buy a motherboard combo with an xp 3000 under $125? Thanks for any help

Too small of an upgrade. You need to get a new mobo, processor, and PCI-E video card. You could reuse any PC-3200 RAM you have in a Socket 939 system.

I recommend you buy what I have (see signature).

It's cheap and upgradable.

I'd get the mobile if it can be had at a decent price. The mobiles are good overclockers and your likely to attain the XP 3000 speeds with it. Don't mess with the Semperon.

If your not looking to build a completely new machine, then don't.

I already have a computer that blows this away, its just meant as a small upgrade for my multimedia storage computer so that I can use the 2600xp in another case with left over and old parts and sell to get out of my basement. I thought I mentioned this in my innitial post, my sig shows the basics of my main rig.

I'll be throwing two 256 meg pc3500 sticks of cas2 OCZ ddr into the spare parts case I'm selling and transfer ram from my sig below into the multimedia computer and buy two 1 gig sticks for my main computer. I like the hand me down method. Recommend cas 2 1 gig sticks for my dfi board on my sig?
