JUST OFF HAND , ANYONE REMEMBER HOW A DUAL P3 say 2x 866 compares with say a small p4. I have the oportunaty of setting one up but wonder if it`s worth while considering it`s 80$ cad.

What are you going to be using it for?

A hippie computer, most likely.

That would be a nice rock for my zen garden...

for surfing, msn messenger a little basic word and excel however , perhaps some dvd burning.

What i`m wondering is the performance of the dualie p3 compared to a small p4. If a small p4 sys is less expensive and in the end more performing that why go for the little dual p3 !

Reply to pike

Do you have the p4 or is it something you're thinking about buying?

Reply to Yahiko81

FWIW My Duron 848 still surfs just fine. An 866 P3 should be a bit faster, and 2 of them just means you wont' have issues multithreading.

It'll be slower than a 2.8g P4 regardless of what you're doing (i.e., even in a perfect smp situation, the P4 will likely be faster), and anything dual core.

Oh, i started playing with p1`s and p2`s for kids than went up into these p3`s and have 7 or 8 370 cpu`s that i`d like to use

Reply to pike

how do you beleive a dual p3 2 x 866 would compare to a small p4 say a 1.6 or 1.8?

Perhaps it`s a good time to upgrade my 13 yearold`s p3 750

Reply to pike

I might have a processor that you can have. I'll have to fish around for it. I think it's either a 2.4 or 2.6 p4. No promises though, my pc stuff seems to randomly disappear.

Reply to Yahiko81

That's because you keep ramming things up your bottom.

Not Intentionally, I'm just not cautious of where I sit.

If he's a smart kid he most likely barterd an Nforce 3 board & 64-3200 from one of his buddies & surpassed your system ages ago. :P

Single P3@1Ghz ~ P4@1.5Ghz. (don't remember if it was a little slower or faster)

So, a single P3/866 will be a little slower than that. Add the 2nd CPU, and sometimes it'll be faster than a 1.8, sometimes slower depending on multi-tasking/threading at the time.

IMO, its more dependent on the RAM & OS once you've broken the 700-800mhz range for basic surfing/word/excel/email/solitare. I see next to no difference between a 1ghz Athlon (PC133 RAM) and an 800mhz Duron in booting/surfing/etc. However, they're running different OS's - Athlon on 2kPro, Duron on 98se. RAM is 512 & 384 resp.

It's the tyan tiger 230t. A low end server board. I don't beleive it's worth what the guy is asking: 80 CAD without any processor but would be fun for my daughter compared to her single p3 750 and for her dad to set up. I need Pc 133 ram sticks

For that board with no CPU's, I doubt it's worth it. Nice board, but old, and IIRC, very little OC'ing ability. You should be able to get a Socket A mobo for under $50 new (in US prices, though you should be able to find a used one for even less), and then a $50 CPU. About the same, and you don't have to find 2 CPUs.

If you were going to put some of the 1.3ghz or 1.4ghz Tualitin P3's in it, it would be a nice fast dual system.

I have 866 p3's. And the tyan site says the board takes dual p3's of that speed only if they are of the 512 cache L2 series. Mine are 866/256/133/1.7v

There seems to be 3 versions of socket 370 p-3 at 133 mhz

256 L2
512 L2
coppermine

what's the difference with the coppermine ?

Reply to pike

Sell them? I just bought them!

So what is the difference between a coppermine and a regular 370 p-3?

Are my 866/256/133/1.7v coppermines?

Reply to pike

nice and clear...thank you.

Aren't you from canada? Ontario?

Then there's the story of how THG got Intel to pull out the 1.13Ghz Coppermine.

That was a pure power display from THG, for sure.

Do you have any links at hand for me to read that story? I'm interested.

(I didn't even know about THG back in those days..)
