I think I've finally decided on what the hell to buy for my gaming PC.. after changing my mind like four hundred times. I already have a case, DVD drives, video card and accessories.. So here's what I'm planning:

Processor:
AMD Opteron 170
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E1681...

Motherboard:
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E1681...

RAM:
CORSAIR XMS 2GB DDR 400 SDRAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E1682...

Power Supply:
Antec TruePower 2.0 550w
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E1681...

and then this for my processor:
ZALMAN CNPS9500 92mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan w/Heatsink
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E1683...

I plan on overclocking at least the processor.. It sounds like that Zalman will treat me pretty well :D .

As far as fans, I plan on getting the highest air flow fans I can find (not really worried about noise) and putting two 80MM fans on the back, two 80MM fans on the front, a 120MM fan on top and a 120MM fan on the side. It seems like this will keep my PC cooled pretty well.

What's everybody think? 8)

i hope im not blind, but i think u forgot to meantion the video card... depending on the card id rate it about an 8, probably one of the better computers u could build in the price range... probably runs everything maxxed out... no fair

i was going to get a new card but my system is socket 478 agp, so im gona wait for conroe (and amds answer) and get a whole new system instead (and new PCIe video card), yeah the 5600 is shocking and its worse when you downgrade from a card twice as quick...

According to the second sentence in his post, he already has one.

my b, but he didnt actually say what the card was? unless its in his sig which ill read after i post this... it could be a 6600 vanilla, and in that case id give the rig a 4, it wouldnt be able to run any new games maxxed out... but video card aside its a nice rig, r u gonna overclock?

Looks good so far, but you forgot to list the HDD and Video Card, so I'm giving you a:

---6---

If you list the vid card and HDD setup, you should be pushing an 8 or 9 if you play your cards right. I'd go RAID 0 just to keep the performance at its peak.

I do plan on overclocking, yes :D .

Would anybody improve on anything? Say I had the best video card for this system, why wouldn't (assuming it didn't) score a 10/10?

About the video card.. Right now I only have a Radeon X700 Pro 256MG, but I think I'm going to give that to a friend and maybe getting a Radeon X1600 Pro 512MG or a eVGA 7800gt.

eVGA 7800gt:

Radeon X1600 Pro: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E1681...

I'm not too excited about upgrading my graphics card right now.. It seems like with Windows Vista and DirectX10, I should wait..? Maybe I will get the eVGA 7800gt though.

Edit: Forgot to mention I plan on getting a WD Raptor hard drive and running Windows and games off that.
March 3, 2006 4:26:40 PM

The Raptors are just crazy fast. Most people can't tell, but with 2Gb of RAM and a Raptor, you'll be loading games twice as fast as your friends.

Since I love having choices, here is my assesment:

Adding 1 Raptor and a 7800GT would get you an 8.

Two raptors in RAID 0 and a 7800GT would be 8.5

Two Raptors and the X1900XT 512Mb Bankruptcy edition would be a 9.5

All said and done, those are great choices. Don't go broke trying for a 10, its better to have fun with a 9 and have enough money left over to spend on some killer peripherals, like a G7 laser mouse and 4S Steelpad. Mmmm...headshots.

id agree, the only reason it isnt higher is because of the slower drive... if u raided 2 raptors itd be much higher, and be a bit faster. if u sell ur x700pro do NOT get an x1600, thats actually pretty much a downgrade, i think the x700 outperofmrs a 1600... get a 7800gt or an x1800xt/x1900xt ull be much happier. u also didnt meantion the monitor :)  a good monitor pulls the entire system together IMO

I agree. I have a 21" Sony Trinitron E540. I'm very happy with how games look on it :D
March 4, 2006 12:49:35 AM

damn, whatd that set u back 500 bux :p ... prob looks amazing though. id say dont go that overboard with ur monitor, unless u have the cash/rig to back it up, and it seems that u have the rig (depending on the card u have once again) but a nice 19inch lcd would really top that rig off and be able to shine
March 4, 2006 1:46:18 AM

Got a almost new dell P1130 21 which the same as that sony. Very nice monitor but sadly it has a sight prob with one of the caps on the high voltage that im trying to get a good tester to find out which one it is.
