I have a budget of around $1000 and was thinking of getting the opteron 144 venus 1.8GHZ and overclocking it for gaming. Anybody got this CPU and have good results with it? Does the 939 version use unbuffered Non-ECC memory?
i have a 146 and it's been great so far. OCs very well. the 939 version uses unbuffered non-ECC ram. check out www.dfi-street.com for a ton of OC info with the opterons.
and i highly recommend running SLI for gaming. my 6600 GTs are a great bang for the buck even though the 7800 GTs are coming down a lot in price nowadays
I've read a bunch of reviews and forums on these and am ready to order one myself. Mwave has the best price on the boxed version. You can buy a processor/motherboard combo deal from monarchcomputer.com with the OEM version. They price the OEM version at only $135! They also have a lot of different motherboards to choose from at competitive prices as well.
