Does anybody know of a software package on PC that lets me save toner on my
LaserJet? So far I only found InkSaver
(http://www.inksaver.com/overview/index.html), but it only works for ink,
and does not work for laser printers
:-(

Many lasers, all the HPs I've used, have settings that affect how much
toner you use. Older ones, like the HPII actually have a dial (near
the toner cart) that you adjusts print density directly.
Later ones do it in software. Look at the printer settings, select
your printer, right-click for properties. In my HP4 under "device
options" there is a "print quality" setting with light, medium, dark.
Light uses less toner.

Otherwise, you can print smaller, scale the output, saves paper too if
you print 2 pages/sheet reduced, good fro drafts, web pages, etc.
Often a feature in the printing settings, or using a 3rd party app
"FinePrint". <http://www.fineprint.com/>

What type of laser printer do you have? This should be a function of the
printer driver.

I don't like the quality of "draft" or "economy" modes. I worked before with
InkSaver and the quality was still pretty good, and I could adjust the
savings depending on what I wanted to print. I was wondering if there is a
similar product for the laser printers.

I am using PretonSaver. It save me money every time I print. It support both laser (toner) printers and inkjet printers. It works great. Can save you up to 50% of toner and ink expense, and provide great quality.

It is way better then "draft mode" or "eco mode".

Check it out at Half The Ink http://www.halftheink.com

PretonSaver is printer independent which mean it is compatible with every existing or future printer models

They have a 64 bit version which is usaful becuase I use windows 7 64bit on mu home PC.

There are about a dozen utilities for spreading toner more thinly and an overlapping list of print-preview services that let you tweak the layout or delete unwanted paragraphs and pages. Generally the toner-spreading utilities come at a cost.

http://veg-buildlog.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/saving-ink-with-spranq-ecofont.html
is a list of them with a short description of each. I've had good results from Greencloud free edition. It does print its name as a footnote to every page, so I'll probably go with other people in this thread and pay for software sooner or later. Adobe Leanprint looks good for Office software + Adobe + Firefox. Priprinter is $5 more but has a lot of manual features for those who want to use them. I've tried a paid-for version of Preton and wish it had a free trial, because it hasn't started working yet on my computer.

The full list is

  • cleverprint
    ecofont
    ecoprint
    fineprint
    getdimples
    greencloud
    greenprint
    inkguard
    inksaver
    pretonsaver
    printandsave
    printfab
    priprinter
