The online instructions for the firmware upgrade of the FVS328 include a
factory reset after installing the upgrade. What is the purpose of the
factory reset? All of the settings from the previous firmware release
appear to be valid.

Best,
Christopher

It's a cover your ass type of precaution. If they added any new fields
in memory for new configuration values then the old memory layout may
not work correctly. It's not likely to be a problem though, I imagine
most people don't bother with this step but you are not following the
manufacturers directions properly if you should try it if any problems
develop before calling them for help.

I found one text entry that should have been "server" and after the firmware
upgrade become "erver". I suspect the new firmware did change the memory
map. I triggered the factory reset, reentered the configuration parameters,
and now VPN appears to be working. So, it appears the factory reset was
actually required for this particular firmware upgrade.

Best,
Christopher
