How much better will an AMD Sempron 3000+ 2.0GHz (Barton) processor be over my current Athlon XP 2200+ 1.8GHz? I want to use it for gaming and video/audio. No overclocking. This is all I really have to work with money-wise.

Using the "mother of all CPU charts" for 2005, I'd estimate you would get about a 25% increase in your framerates for games.
I based this on the OpenGL chart. The Athlon XP 2200 was not listed, so I estimated using the 2000,2100, and 2400. However, your results may not be as good because the Athlon XPs were tested using a mobo with a KT333 chipset, while the Semprons were tested using a mobo with an NForce 2 chipset.

Unless you have a use for the older processor (another build), or a buyer for the old one, and can get a great price for the new one, it's not a monumental upgrade, and you possibly wouldn't notice the difference.

(I'd first check that your mb revision number (1.0, 2.0, 2.1, etc..) supports the Sempron series of socket "A" processors, as many older boards, including some KT400A boards, definitely do not...)

Note: you can usually find good socket 754/Sempron 3000+ mianboard/cpu combo for not much more than $140, and that *would* be a noticeable improvement, as a socket 754 rig is generally a bit faster than a socket A rig...!

The diffrence is 2Ghz with 512 vs 1800 with 265

And that its 200 Mhz + 256kb extra cache
the extra cache gives u a extra cpu step(max) so comparied 1800 vs 2200 u gain MAX 20% in CPU speed (ofthen just what the pure Mhz gives u thats so thats 10-15% extra

Worth it?

No, I think not get yourself some more ram instead or just save you money for a new mb cpu combo.

mdd1963 is right. I don't think there would be any huge gains, depending on the rest of your hardware, to justify the cost. Have you tried overclocking the current chip. You might have favorable results, again depending your hardware.

I have 1.5 Gb of RAM and a Radeon 9600 Pro. If I do decide to buy this processor I would upgrade my video card to a better one at the same time. Thanks for all the input - keep it up.
