Hi, what gfx card is ideal in terms of performance/price for 1280 x 1024 reso? I'm asking this cuz my new 19" LCD's max reso is 1280x1024, so I don't really need a super duper card that can power 1600 reso at maxed out settings etc etc.

Would a 7800 GT suffice? Just wondering, thnx.

I'm in the same boat as you and my system holds up fine. Only with the newest titles do I have to turn down the details a little. So a 7800GT would prolly work fine. Wait till the 7900GT comes out though and you'll basically get a 7800GTX for the same price as a 7800GT now. If not a little better. And it'll prolly run a hell of a lot cooler.

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah I'm waiting for the 7900 to see what it's like. If the 7900 gt is not much more than the 7800 gt, I'll prolly get that. BTW, The games I play are mostly FPS, like Call of duty 2.

I have the 7800GT and a 19" LCD with a 1280x1024 native resolution. That will do just fine for you. Sounds like you are on the right track, unless you want to spend less or get superhigh end power, the 7800GT is a great bang/buck selection. I would see what the 7900GT's pricing is, it should launch tomorrow. I'm going to use my eVGA step-up program to get a 7900GT soon.

if u want to play cod2 with high details look into a video card with 512 memory, COD2 is probably one of the only games that takes advantage of more than 256 video memory, the x1800xl 512 mb (i think) will be retailing for 299 when ati cuts prices... that may be a better bargin over a 7800gt in terms of perforamnce in cod2...

hmm, that ati card does sound nice. question, though. I've already bought a mobo with "nvidia northbridge". Does this mean the hardware is solely for nvidia cards and I have to buy a nvidia card? or is it a software thing that I can update/replace (like how you can update bios). Sorry if it's a noob question, but I'm a noob when it comes to mobos.

no, u can use ati cards in nforce chipsets... the x850xt is only 169, u may also want to consider that if u dont want to spend as much, it wont be as fast as the other 2 choices but its very cheap and a good deal... for cod2 tho x1800xl 512 mb all the way, cod2 uses lots of video memory at higher details
