If you enjoy short hops, the San Juan islands in Washington state, USA
can be nice. Many of the islands have small airstrips (some paved,
some grass and/or dirt). This type of island hopping is perfect for
*unplanned* VFR flying (quasi-Quilling, as it were), as you can just
fly over an island, spot an airstrip, then decide to land. I enjoy
this type of thing because I love practicing my landings!

I also really enjoy flying along the coast and into the mountains
along the west coast of B.C. (Canada), continuing up along the
southeast/southcentral Alaska coast. The Fjords on the western coast
of New Zealand's south island are also very nice to fly over. The
mountains in Europe are also nice to fly over. Island hopping in
Hawaii can be fun as well.

I'm not very inspired by flying over crowded cities or hundreds of
miles of flat cornfields and such, so I'm always looking for
interesting mountains and islands to fly around. The "best of the
best" for me are areas where mountains meet the sea, and there are
plenty of interesting fjords and river valleys to explore.

No add-ons?! Eek! You really must do something about this serious
oversight! :) Even if you don't want to use payware add-ons, there
are many good freeware add-ons available; as long as disk space isn't
terribly limited.

If you're interested in flying over western Washington, B.C. and
Alaska, do visit the avsim.com file library and search for "Holger
Sandmann" (no quotes necessary). Holger created the beautiful
payware "Misty Fjords" scenery, but he has also created many nice
freeware sceneries, which, like Misty Fjords, are a combination of
enhanced terrain mesh and hand painted scenery elements that correct
many problems with the default mesh and coastlines, rivers, lakes,
etc.

FSGenesis also offers some freeware terrain mesh (limited sections of
payware products, etc.).

There are many other bits of freeware mesh and scenery for all parts
of the world. If you tell us which areas you're most interested in,
I'm sure someone will be able to mention their favorite add-ons for
those areas.

I could go on and on, but I've got some errands to run, so I really
have to get out of here...now! :)

I'll second that! :) KORS (Orcas Island) is my home field when I
want to fly around the islands. In my real life, I've pedaled my
bike and paddled my kayak all over and around the islands. They are
lovely in real life, and the Orcas Island georender scenery is a fine
add-on.

I have MegaScenery PNW covering the rest of the islands now, so the
area is looking pretty good, though you can see a definite line where
MS PNW meets the Orcas Island georender. That doesn't bother me much
though, and it's certainly better than flying out of the Orcas Island
scenery and into the default. :)

Melissa,

I have noticed that there has been a lot of work done on sceneries and the
like for that part of the country (and AK of course). I guess it's too bad
I moved to phx. I really like flying out of my own area...recall I used to
be Mr Steve of the White Mountains - KSOW? That is in NE AZ Show Low to be
exact and where I was living when we first got to talking. The name Show
Low came from the 1800's when the area was being settled. The town was lost
in a poker game (high low) and the town was lost to the winner (low) thus
show your low card...Show Low. Enough history. I will continue to fly from
KORS to KBLI and other Island and now and then to KSEA, but is you ever run
across stuff for my area, let me know. I have found a few things (freeware
stuff) but not much. All very localized around Sky Harbor (KPHX)

Steve,

I found this file in the library over at avsim:

fsg_dem38m_usrk_az.zip

38 meter land mesh for most of the southern rockies including Arizona. This
past Wednesday, I flew from Chandler to Las Cruces and back (for real) and
then recreated the flight in FS9. This scenery mesh makes the mountains
much more realistic (jagged and steep) as well as helping things like
Camelback and Piestewa Peak get some better definition.

Four Peaks and the Superstitions are better as are the Bradshaws on the way
to Prescott. It makes the Verde Valley/Sedona/Flag terrain much better too.

Just an FYI,

Thanks Jay. I've made a few trips back and forth from KSOW to P19 and KDVT
so this will really mean something to me. My CFI buddy who has been
teaching me took a job flying Phil Mickelson around...tough job huh...a
Gulfstream. :) He was real cheap. Won't find that now, but do you know any
that are very reasonable? I will eventually need one Sport rated.

Thanks again.

Steve,

I just passed the checkride for my private certificate last October so I'm
still very, very wet behind the ears insofar as the aviation community goes.

I'd guess (and it would be just that...) that you'd have the best luck
finding a Sport Pilot CFI out away from the busy Class D airports like DVT,
CHD, FFZ, SDL, GYR and IWA. But, I have to admit, I don't know where in the
heck that would be in the valley.

Maybe somewhere like Gila Bend where the altitude is relatively low and you
don't have extreme density altitude issues to deal with like you do up on
the rim and at places like Sedona and Prescott.

Maybe you could put up flyers in the pilot's lounges around town and see if
anyone is teaching Sport Pilot yet?

Just thinking out loud...

Jay

PS...I lost a CFI to a corporate flying job too. Little different twist:
Mine was hired away by another one of his *students* to be his personal
pilot for long trips back east, but still continue (I think) to teach him to
fly along the way. How's that for a good gig?

I quite enjoy the short hop from London Heathrow (EGLL) to London City
(EGLC) as it is only 34.5 km or you can do it VFR by following the Thames
Eastwards until you spot the Millennium Dome. Easy in something small but
tricky if you try something 737 size or larger.

Also quite like the area in Scotland around Plockton (UK10), you could run
East to Inverness (EGPE) which is around 100 km but use something small
especially if you intend doing the return leg.

I was just replying to a message about a slow challenger II being
allowed into some airports. But my computer scared me and I cut the
power. Now I'm not scared of the computer but I can't find the original
post. But here goes.

Up until 1997 the regional airport in Temple Texas would not allow our
ultralights or even the micro-lights to land there. I don't know how
legal they were but no one wanted to land and find out. But now, if an
aircraft is N numbered and the pilot has at least a Sport Pilot License
and 2-way commo with a controller (tower), I cannot see how some of the
smaller airports could deny landing clearance. Now getting up to the
bigger airports, even with a transponder with mode c, probably has some
SOP that would not allow a plane with a top speed of 60MPH or so to
land. But it's just my thoughts, I could very well be wrong.

I recommend having a trip up the Columbia River in Oregon. Have a look at
Mount Hood and the Cascades. There is a lot of free ad-on scenery to enhance
it. Some by Holger Sandmann.
Practically anywhere in New Zealand makes for very realistic flying, but
especially if you get hold of the wonderful photo realistic scenery by Robin
Corn.
Go to http://www.windowlight.co.nz/wellington.html and follow all kinds
of leads from there.

also http://www.massey.ac.nz/%7Eavweb/papers/fltsimdesign/scenery9.html
The South Island around Christchurch and also Lake Kaniere is most
rewarding.

Two of the very best bits of payware scenery both photoreal and cityscape
are Venice and Budapest by Andras Kosma. You can obtain as one product from.
These are as good as tourist brochures of the areas.

Do you have hi-res mesh? of the USA?

If you'd like to see the Appalachian mountains in Pennsylvania..
(granted it's no Innsbruck or Swiss Alps) and take off with mountain
off the port side.. check out Williamsport (KIPT). Set wind out to the
west and takeoff runway heading out of 27. Fly along the ridge passing
University Park (KUNV) and on to Pittsburgh. Check out those Penn
hills!! .. and see if you can spot the nuke cooling towers around
Pitt.. and also if KPIT is blended into the hills or one of those
`platform mesh' deals. :)

Or come about and head for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (KAVP) and you'll
see more cooling towers south on the river.. and lost of terrain
features. IRL.. there's a long and HIGH elevated strobe array (on
towers) into Rwy4. This is not seen in the Sim however. Can anyone
make the strobe-way for Wilkes-Barre Rwy4 as add-in?

Even better with FSGenesis mesh and some good land class - terrain
textures!!
