More importantly MPC-HC is now built against FFMPEG and thus does not require (although it still supports) external codecs (like ffdshow) and splitters (like haali). This makes it a very attractive alternative to VLC and other players as it is a single portable executable that can play anything.

MPC was originally developed by Gabest. However, he has stopped updating the program some time ago.

MPC - HC is the continuation of the original MPC project by around 24 developers and been updated as of January 2011.
