Hi, I'm a looking into buying and putting together a decent/good gaming rig. I'm fairly new to building my own machine, so I could use some imput if anyone would be so kind. I'd like for the system to play the more current set of PC games (Elder Scrolls IV: Obilvion for example) decently. I'd like to also keep it below 2,000$ if at all possible.

I did a bit of brief poking around and this is something I came up with on the fly from looking at New Egg to get some ideas. Tell me what you folks think!

I have a mouse/keyboard as well as monitor. So how do you fellows feel about it?

1) Is it viable, I mean are these parts compatible?
2) Is it a wise value?
3) Any suggestions as to how I should change it?

Thanks.

EDIT: Not sure what happened with the multiple post thing, but either a mod corrected it or it just seemed to happen by itself. Weird.

EDIT x2: Well, ahem, my bad. That wasn't the correct motherboard in fact that one wasn't even on my list. I must have copy/pasted the wrong one. Thanks for the suggestions, so what about that list now?

I don't think that motherboard is the right one for you unless you are gonna go with an Intel chip.....

There are a variety of SLI boards out there, and I think you have inadvertantly chosen a socket 775 board for an Intel processor, not exactly compatible for your socket 939 processor...

Choose a single slot board, it will be quite a while before a single 7900GTX will not run a game at a desired resolution....

If determined to have an SLI board/solution, then buy two 7900GT cards ($600) outright with the SLI card....

After some corrections and thought, how does this PS sound? It looked suitable but I don't know much about modular power systems.

Rosewill RP550S-2MK 550W Modular Power Supply

Will the modular power work fine with this setup? I assume so.

Anybody who pisses away 140 bucks on a case should be shot. You can get a good steel case with plenty of ventilation for 40 bucks. Put a little effort into it. It's not whats on the outside. Spend that extra 100 dollars on the inside.

Buy a dvd reader/writer.

Maybe upgrade to xp-pro 64bit..,.thats where the future is right now.

Nice setup with the corrections (good PCI-E non-SLI motherboard) :)

As for the CPU, the 3800+ is certainly not a bad solution, for a little more money you can get an Opteron 165 (it is clocked slower, but overclocks really well) and has double the L2 cache. That one is your call however.

On the PSU, I perfer Antec Truepower PSUs, have never had a problem with them, they run quiet, and are of high quality.

Antec 550W PSU $89 then a $15 MIR
