I have multiple occurences of items on my desktop (including 6 recycle
bins!) Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. It happened after I
rebooted.

Run "error check " on that disk, run a registry program , like norton from
the Cd and see if there are registry problems

If this is a recent issue, try using System Restore to take you back to a
time prior to when this began, Start\All Programs\Accessories\System
Tools\System Restore.
