Yesterday I installed some new memory. When I loaded up the sim, my
yoke and HOTAS were missing. Some rebooting and switching of USB
sockets got them both back, but this morning the yoke was gone again.
Rebooting didn't solve the problem, though unplugging the yoke,
rebooting, and plugging it in again got it back. Since I wanted to do
some flying, I decided not to test further by rebooting again.

But in case the problem does come back, is there a known procedure for
getting WinXP to think seriously about which USB devices it really has,
and sticking with them? (I've got six ports and six devices, though
only three of them see regular use.)

I fixed it. And in case anyone has the same problem, here's what I did:

1. For non-CH devices, the following seems to work:

a. Unplug the offending (i.e., missing) USB device.

b. Reboot.

c. Plug the missing USB device in again.

d. Reboot and test. (How do you test? Fastest way is Windows Start menu
| Settings | Control Panel | Game Controllers. This gives you a list of
all active game controllers.)

2. CH devices can be more stubborn.

a. Unplug device.

b. Download chdelete.exe program from CH-Products website.

c. Run program and delete all CH devices. (Be sure to unplug first.)

d. Reboot. (Program doesn't tell you to do this.)

e. Plug device back in. Device will install -- perhaps incrementally.
Defaults worked fine for me. I ran CH Manager program a couple times to
kick things along. After (I think) 3 different "New device" messages,
it all seemed to be working again. I ran the CH Manager program twice,
then recalibrated my yoke.

f. Reboot and test. (How do you test? Fastest way is Windows Start menu
| Settings | Control Panel | Game Controllers. This gives you a list of
all active game controllers.)

Hi

Also, make sure you didn't make the same mistake as I did some some
ago.

I'd visited <URL:http://grc.com/default.htm>, downloaded and installed
their UnPlug 'n Pray executable
<URL:http://www.grc.com/unpnp/unpnp.htm> but had forgotten that I'd
done so. Naturally this caused a few problems when I tried quickly to
reinstall an old scanner.

IIRC, UnPnP disables port 5,000 but please don't quote me on this. (I
haven't re-read GRC's blurb on the subject)

I have no idea how, or if, this will affect CH's products.

Regards
James
