Canon i250 - drivers

Problem - when set to plain paper, black prints fuzzy, even at high
quality - colour prints great.
Using - Windows 98 SE - generic ink

I can fool the printer by choosing anything but plain paper - then the
black prints perfectly.

I tried to install the latest drivers, but no go - I get an alert "C is
not a registered protocol" and I cannot install the drivers.

Suggestions as to how to fix the plain paper problem would be
appreciated.
